Vice President Dick Cheney is expected to retire within a year.

Senior GOP sources envision the retirement of Mr. Cheney in 2007, months after the congressional elections. The sources said Mr. Cheney would be persuaded to step down as he becomes an increasing political liability to President Bush.

The sources reported a growing rift between the president and vice president as well as their staffs. They cited Mr. Cheney's failure to immediately tell the president of the accidental shooting of the vice president's hunting colleague earlier this month. The White House didn't learn of the incident until 18 hours later.

So Secretary of State and NSA don't measure up for a VP?
Remember, we have elected VP's with much less experience and qualifications...

I wasn't talking issues, frankly most of us here disagree with her stances on some issues. (Frankly, most of us here disagree with the President on at least a few issues)

I just wanted to see Teddy tell here she was unqualified for the job, and then remind us of his long experience before being elected to the Senate-for-Life.

Whomever it is, hopefully he (or she) does not get confirmed until AFTER January 20, 2007 to guarantee the ability to run TWO full terms.

If Bush uses this opportunity to try and select his successor...

I doubt very much that Mike Pence or George Allen would accept.
So I reckon ol' Cheney had better see it thru.

If this story is true, that is why Cheney would wait until January to retire. I hope Cheney doesn't do this. The whole Spiro Agnew, to VP Ford to President Ford thing was a kooky loop in the way things usually run. I would rather not take the risk, and have Cheney stay in as long as he can.

“They(aspens) turn in clusters... Cheney will step down in 2006... because their roots are connected.”

If Cheney and Dubya went hunting together and shot each other, then Hastert would become the President.

Now that would be the way to go! LOL!

I guess my question is why do you think they'd even be offered the position.... What inside info do you have that would indicate such an offer? Curious.

How many times over the past five years have we been told that senior GOP sources say there's a growing rift between the POTUS and the VP, yada, yada, yada?

For me, there is one OVERRIDING reason to keep Cheney in office: THE DEMONRATS HATE HIM like Mets fans hate Yankee fans.

I can't think of too many republicans that I would rather not see as president than Rice.

The last vice-president to leave office early other than by death or coming indictment - John C. Calhoun.

Didn't he go on to be a bit player on "Amos and Andy"?
