WELD COUNTY - An explosion at a natural gas compression station in southwest Weld County injured one employee and forced people living in the area to evacuate Sunday.
The explosion happened while the employee was bleeding off a gas pipeline, said Weld County sheriff's spokeswoman Margie Martinez. She says this is a normal procedure and it's not clear what triggered the explosion.
The employee suffered burns to the hands and face and was transported to the Northern Colorado Medical Center.
For over an hour, the fire sent up 20-foot flames and a plume of black smoke that was visible from the south Denver Metro area.
The compression station is located off of County Road 19, between roads 8 and 10, southwest of Fort Lupton and southeast of Dacono. People living within a one-mile radius were evacuated when the fire was at its height. They will be allowed to return home soon, Martinez said.
She said the gas line that was feeding the station has been turned off and only the residual gas is still burning.
The Fort Lupton Fire Department had to pull its crews back from the scene because the fire was too hot and they didn't have the right equipment. They called for the evacuation due to concern over a pressurized tank that sits at the site.
EnCana owns the gas pipeline. It was a Kerr-McGee employee who was bleeding off the line when the explosion happened.

Well whatever it was we know it was not related to terrorism. We know this from past expierence when stories like this break, before all the facts are available they always assure us it was not related to terrorism. I am sure at least one media talking head has already announced that.
According to the article it was an explosion at a natural gas compressor station, not a refinery.
I said "compressor station" because you dont pump gas, you compress it.
There are a lot of differences.
The reporter is an idiot.
Static discharge? It's dry, breezy and warm.
Non-Somking Zone?????
Very possible.
I looked at pix on Fox.
Possibly a liquids recovery bottle downstream from the coolers.
Fire doesnt look very series
There is a huge difference... not good, but much better than initially reported on line on this article. Thanks!
