Meet Gene.

A real breakthrough or another way to sell pills? One does not exclude the other; and for people who need the therapy it could be a lifesaver.

This is good info for those of us who have always realized it runs in families. Finally nice to have some proof to work with.

I suffer from depression - strong family history. I get on with life the best I can - I've got a supportive wife and kids. But I feel like crap virtually every day. If I could go home to be with the Lord I would, but I'm no quitter,
If this is truish, it will be one in the eye for all those who tell me it's somehow my own fault.
We'll wait and see

So there is a device that can measure depression ?
Seems like a discovery of an invention like that would be more news than a gene, since there is nothing people can do to change there genes but think of what could be done with a depression measuring machine?
For example, hook it up to the spouse, install them in restaurants, movie theaters, the possibilities where satisfaction needs to be benchmarked are endless!

If pharma companies can find better treatments for depression, they can sell all the pills they want as far as I'm concerned. I'm no commie! :)

There is a strong family history of depression in my family but I haven't succumbed to it, thankfully. I've always held that life is too short, precious to be depressed. It sounds trite but it's rings law like natural law to me. To not enthusiastically enjoy life is imponderable to me.

Little known fact:
What surprised scientists more than anything was that upon closer inspection the gene complex resembled a donkey.
The offical pseudonym of the gene is the DNC gene.

A while back the UN issued an epidemiologist's report saying that bipolar disorder would become the biggest worldwide cause of disability.
Most bipolars are usually very depressed or "mixed", that is, depressed but excitable, impulsive, and prone to anger. Bipolar disorder runs in families and is certainly metabolic.
Rather looks like the legally disabled will become a voting majority fairly soon. Will be expensive.

Most of the depressed ones are on pills already so different pills wouldn't be much of a change unless they work better. All of my mother in laws family (including my husband) have trouble with depression. My husband is not terribly depressed but some of the others are nuts. I hope this is good news for them.
