The state imposed a $140,000 penalty for what it called "willful, continuing, and egregious" violations of the price law...
The Minnesota Commerce Department on Thursday announced plans to fine a gas station chain $140,000 for repeatedly selling gas below the state's legal minimum price.
The fine against Midwest Oil of Minnesota is twice as large as any imposed on a company since 2001, when the state established a formula based on wholesale prices, fees and taxes to determine a daily floor for gas prices.
Kevin Murphy, deputy commissioner of the department, called the violations "willful, continuing, and egregious and warrant a substantial penalty."
The company has 30 days to contest the fine by requesting a hearing.
In previous cases, companies were fined anywhere from $500 to $70,000 for selling gas too cheaply.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty and several Minnesota legislators have urged a repeal of the state's minimum price rules.
Critics have argued that it ends up costing most customers an extra dollar or more to fill up, without adding to tax revenues.

The same stuff is happening in Hawaii.
Price Controls have never worked, are not working now, and will never work in the future.
However, there are enough stupid people who believe that socialism might work.

Its all about keeping big oil dealers like Wawa and Sheetz from underpricing and putting the local oil dealers who have local politicians in their pockets ,out of business. Yup...once you cut through all the bovine feces, that's exactly what it's about.
It's akin to the WalMart bill which purports to be about one thing but is really nothing but an attack by unions supported by their accomplices in the RAT controlled legislature.

"Now I've Heard Everything" bump.
To: Hemingway's Ghost
Whenever someone griped about the big profit that the oil companies made recently the argument I heard to support "not" doing anything about it was "let capitalism work and that will take care of the high costs".
well, this proves it....capitalism will never work when it comes to gas. The government has made sure of it.

Kevin Murphy is an idiot.
Why do some presumably normal people elect, hire or otherwise tolerate such [censored] to rule over them?
I would do everything in my power to make sure that an [censored] like this would be dusting off his resume.
As a side issue, what possible rationalization can there be for a state government setting the minimum price for anything?
What happened to free exchange, private enterprise?

It's not just there, it's everywhere...milk, tomatoes, oranges, electricity, medical care, the list is practically endless.

"Or is it part of some anti-competition thingy?"
It's a sneaky way to subsidizes the oil companies without making the politicians look like crooks for taking their "campaign contributions".
