New Delhi: The Indian diaspora is today the third largest Asian community in the US, is upwardly mobile and is on its way to becoming a political force in that country.

Samuel said Indian Americans totalled about 1.7 million in the US according to the 2000 census, their numbers having gone up by an incredible 106 percent since 1990. It grew at a rate of 7.6 percent annually in the last 10 years.

Perhaps Bobby Jindal should have been mentioned in the article.

I can say, without a doubt, that every Indian-American (or generally first generation born in my experience) I have ever known are among the most intelligent, amibitious, and positive contributors to society I have seen in my life.

No lie. Anyone who comes here, plays by the rules, and goes straight to the top is ok in my book.

Indians in the US have higher medians incomes than Jews in the US. In fact, they have higher incomes than any other ethnic group in the US. At least that was in the case per the data around 2000. Greeks were second, Jews were third.

I have that belief as well. And the Indian family we know are Muslims to boot.

I'd also like to add that the Eritrean people we know are very nice, moral, and hard workers.

Probably. But of interest to me is the number of Indians I encounter on a regular basis as I interview for new jobs. There are a bunch of recruiters who phone me and speak with some form of south-Asian accent. A couple of those have led to contracts. Twenty years ago (and still today) you see Indians in the hospitality industry, ranging from crummy little motels to groups of several dozen very nice properties. I've encountered them more recently as owners, managers, and recruiters in technology consulting firms.

One thing that strikes me about the Indians I've met is that they intermarry very little - much less than other Asians - even though they don't seem to be strongly religious.

I tend to agree with that. Maybe folks don't consider them as sexually attractive as those incredibly beautiful east Asian gals that are snapped up like hot cakes. I don't know.

Don't you mean Xtra-Marry, I never met an Indian who wasn't married to another Indian.

There's one group from stae in India that all have the last name Patel (they're everywhere here now) and they only marry other Patels

I think it is Gujarat. The Patels dominate the motel business now in the US.

Just a note, Filipinos are about 2 million in the USA, there are about 700,000 in LA alone. They also have above-average education and income. Notable Filipino-heritage Americans include... Michelle Malkin.

Many show disdain toward other cultures. It's "Indian this and Indian that." Some sort of superiority complex. If a Hindu married a Muslim, the formers family would disown him or her even into reincarnation.

No kidding. There was a time when I thought the name "Patel" was somehow derived from the word motel. LOL.

One of my closest childhood friends was from India. For a year or two, I think I spent more time with his family than I did with my own. They were absolutely the most wonderful, morally upstanding, hard-working people one could ever have the good fortune of meeting.
