ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A gunman at Roseburg High School wounded one person early Thursday, sending the campus into a lockdown, Roseburg Police and school administrators said.

The victim, described only as a male student, was being treated at a local hospital, according to Sgt. Aaron Dunbar with the Roseburn Police Department. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.

The shooting happened just before 8 a.m., near the courtyard on the south side of the school, Dunbar said. A short time later, police tracked down and cornered the gunman, who police believe was also a male student.

"There was a brief standoff, with the suspect holding a gun to his head and threatening suicide. The standoff lasted three to five minutes and then the suspect surrendered to police," Dunbar said.

No names have been released and no motive for the shooting was disclosed.

"For the time being, the school is in lockdown. No students are being allowed out, and no parents are being allowed in. Parents of students are asked not to go to the high school," Dunbar said, just before 9 a.m.

A nearby elementary school also was locked down as a precaution.

No, one report I read they thought he might be a former (or current?) employee.

While we merrily and irrelevantly recount scenes from "Blazing Saddles," it remains that a child is in critical condition:

A teenager shot and wounded another student at school Thursday, then fled to a restaurant, where he put the gun to his head before surrendering, police said. The shooter, who police said was a 14-year-old freshman, was arrested shortly after the attack at Roseburg High. The school went into lockdown after the shots were fired about 7:45 a.m.

The victim, identified as Joseph Monti, 16, was shot twice in the abdomen and once in the chest. A bullet also grazed his left elbow, said Kathleen Nickel, spokeswoman for Mercy Medical Center. He "is doing very well, better than can be expected considering the bullet wounds," said hospital CEO Vic Fresolone. He said surgeons had repaired intestinal damage caused by the most serious of the wounds.

The suspect was not immediately identified. Sgt. Aaron Dunbar said the shooting wasn't random and the two knew each other. ... source

This story, from the Coos Bay World, indicates the boy is in critical condition.
