NEW YORK -- The Port Authority said Thursday it will file suit to block a Dubai-based firm from taking over operations at a Port Newark container terminal, saying the federal government has not given them assurances about security issues.

"In fact, Schumer and conservative Republican Senator Tom Coburn from Oklahoma have taken the same position against this sweetheart deal given to DPW/UAE."
Let's see, who do I trust more. Coburn, a principled conservative, or Tommy Franks, who's sticking with Bush out of loyalty?
Principle over loyalty, every time.
"The union is worried it will harm their members."
And Americans aren't worried that Arab run ports will hurt them? Common sense, folks?
The union aspect is a red herring.
"union smell ping"
Why not add a racism ping, while you're at it? Perhaps Laura Bush can push the mouse button for you?
"FACT: Arab countries have been operating in our ports for years.
FACT: Saudi Arabia owns port operations along the entire eastern seaboard and in the gulf."
And these FACTs don't disturb you?
I think you're living in the pre 9/11 world, like the Dems.
"I guess being in NY has a lot to do with Hannity's intellectual honesty in this matter."
Yes, New Yorkers were attacked by terrorists, and remain a target.
Idiot.
You've got an issue with the First Lady?? And are you objecting to the idea that there is union pressure involved in the uproar about the ports?
Which is what my "smell" verbage referred to, not that people who belong to unions are smelly. Necessarily.
"One thing is for sure. The people who are supporting this DPW/UAE sweetheart deal on FR, believe in the bureaucratic judgments of big government Republicans. Why am I not surprised."
That's why they are not reliable in holding Repubs to account, and why we have so many big government Rinos running around in elected positions.
There is little principled opposition to big government here, as long as they're "on our side."
That's one of the sites I looked at. The page you linked provided the names of stevedoring, freight handling service providers, and terminal operators at various terminals where NSCSA makes call. There's no indication that the providers or terminal operators listed are owned by NSCSA. The list appears to be for agent-contact purposes only.
For example, the list includes P&O, Newport News, Barbours Cut Terminal, Shippers Stevedoring, Ocean Terminal, etc., none of which are owned by NSCSA to my knowledge.
Under New Jersey, the list names American Stevedoring, but I'm not seeing any indication that American Stevedoring is actually owned by NSCSA.
From the looks of it, old Sabato Catucci and his boys still own American Stevedoring.
"'Horrendous. Scary and horrendous,' said Tom DiDomenico, a longshoreman from East Hanover, uttering one of the few printable reactions by customers at the Port Eatery on Corbin Street in Newark. 'I'm a big Republican and I think Bush has lost his mind.'"
Yeah, but that longshoreman is not a big corporate type Republican, so his concerns don't count. Even if he's on the front line of the war on terror, so to speak.

Sorry for the double post. Don't ask how that happened.
"Not too much different from European history over the same years."
Good point. We did have to stamp out fascism in Europe in the last century.
Wasn't accomplished through free trade with fascist states.
South Africa was pulling that same stunt not too long ago. They got serious about reform when we started to pull on their purse-strings.
Oh, it started long before that. It started before the Roman Empire and continued up through...well, it's still going on in Central Europe. Interspace that with the periodic pograms of Jews (the Nazis just took it to new levels) and Europes history is pretty much one of regular warfare.
"They won't close our bases."
No guarantee on that either. But I do wonder what we are paying them for the "bases?"
Especially when you have an Arab company handling port operations?
Does anyone suppose a terrorist might choose to ship through a port where the operations are run by an Arab company?
Does anyone suppose one of those big boxes filled with nasties could possibibly slip though a 2% inspection? Iguess there would be only a 98% percent chance it would, not very good odds at stopping it I would think.
Now the good news. We're very close to fielding technology that will allow us to complete 100% inspection. The interesting aspect to that is we've been working closely with one of our allies in bringing this technology online. That partner is the UAE.
And that's why they love her heinous so much! Because????????????????
"So, are you postulating that the Coast Guard officer was just giving the official line to the press and by extension, we are all being duped by Bush and the WH?"
What I am telling you is that only the chosen, in a matters like these, are even allowed to speak to the press. They are PR guys and are well schooled before speaking.
Moreover, we can't have an active military guy publically challenging the commander in chief. That's a no brainer...everyone who has ever served knows that.
Causing untold harm to the economy during the holiday season.
They were concerned that computerized tracking would cost them jobs.
Suddenly these longshoremen are concerned about 'security'
They are, except it's not national security, it's their job security that is first and foremost.
