NEW YORK -- The Port Authority said Thursday it will file suit to block a Dubai-based firm from taking over operations at a Port Newark container terminal, saying the federal government has not given them assurances about security issues.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A United Arab Emirates company offered Thursday to delay its takeover of most operations at six U.S. ports to give the Bush administration more time to convince skeptical lawmakers the deal poses no security risks. (Liz Scott - A/P writer).

LOL! Those crazy Arabs...Fortune 1,000,000?
Personally don't see this as a business decision, economic issue, or a security issue. It's a long-term strategic problem. We've been trading with the Islamic nations for decades now and helping them modernize. Hasn't changed the core belief of their average citizen that we (anyone who does not share their faith) are infidels and worthy of violent death.
Peace cannot be bought and sold. Historical precedent. We're just buying time. Everytime one of our 'allies' in that part of the world has the opportunity to stand with us, (Turkey, for instance) they don't. They let us run bases over there, but they don't stand and fight in any meaningful fashion.
UAE's motivation for allying with us is that they've been arguing with Iran over some islands in the Gulf for years. Their only real long-term strategic interest in siding with us is that we're the only thing that keeping them safe from Iran. They won't close our bases.
Several hundred years of ME history clearly shows that Islamists are not capable of long-term peace (even with each other).

Looks like Islamofascism is alive and well in UAE and Somalia
Not too much different from European history over the same years.
So, are you postulating that the Coast Guard officer was just giving the official line to the press and by extension, we are all being duped by Bush and the WH?
My understanding is that the American companies don't want to deal with the unions.
I had heard that dealing with the unions was the major problem but I also never heard the name of an American company that held this view. I am inclined to agree with you.
Yeah, Maersk is a monster. Thanks. Knew I "overheard" something. : )
Thanks Jane.. I still wonder how many of the knee-jerkers took the time to read any of the details of the transaction..
Also, what the heck is $6.8 B---aren't we flushing down over $150 B or is it $250 B into the cesspool called, New Orleans? And there, we won't get any profit considering the billions in welfare we'll have to pay the NO residents after their (ugh) city is built.
Thanks
Thanks
Thanks
To what does it sound familiar?
Now go away, and stop bot-ering me.
I would rather get my facts from P&O, the New York Port Authority, the New Jersey Port Authority, and the Port Newark Container Terminal then U.S. News and World Report...I prefer my facts from the source vs a reporter who counts on an ignorant consumer...
It is 5 ports...as New York and New Jersey are in fact the Newark-Elizabeth terminals run by Maersk Sealand, P&O and Maher and administered jointly by both New York and New Jersey Port Authorities...
The complex also includes an auto processing section run by FAPS Inc, DAS Inc and Toyota...
Do a little research and educate yourself...it only takes a few mouse clicks and keyboard pecks...
To the "yes men" around here.
Well in NYC/NJ between the teamsters and the longshoremen unions you can assume nothing will happen w/o the unions on board.
