New York City's water supply could be the target of contamination if a water system map made its way into the wrong hands, an environmentalist said.
The threat has arisen since someone broke into a vehicle belonging to a Department of Environmental Protection maintenance supervisor and stole an agency laptop containing a map of the water system. If the map was detailed enough,"there could be the opportunity to pose a threat," the executive director for the Center for Environmental Information, Cindy Stachowski, said. Even without a map, Ms. Stachowski added, someone pouring biological, chemical, or radiological contaminants into a fresh water source could adulterate the water system.

Happy, as always, to be living the quiet life in the hinterlands.
Way to go Ski. There may be a brain in there afterall.
It would be interesting to know if it was a private vehicle or not, to know if the laptop was taken just as loot or taken with the knowledge that it belonged to a water dept. official.

On 9-11 I lived 35 miles NE of New York City and had city water.
Now I live 100 miles away and have a well, a 10,000 watt generator and 3 neighborhood farms.
not as as scary as the natural gas systems in NYC
all out there on the internet
Cyptome.org has tons of readily available surveilance (all legal) of anything you can imagine.

Detailed enough? It's easy enough to find New York City's reservoirs. Many are in the Catskills and I'm sure it's easy enough to find on the Internet. Thanks Al Gore!
My bet is that the crime was caused by some kid who wanted to steal a nifty new laptop computer. It isn't that difficult to determine from where water flows to our major metropolitan regions. Heck, it's much easier to find Lake Meade if the Muslims are looking to attempt to cause water trouble. Why risk getting snagged by the police committing a minor property crime in the meantime?
Oh, and the terrorists will need to deliver the contaminants via freight train if they desire sufficient concentration. It'll also need to be colorless, odorless, and tasteless. I wouldn't sweat this threat too much.

Well, I operate a small water company. We have been doing a lot lately to upgrade well-head security, storage, etc.. A Public Utilities Commision inspector told me this morning that they have an actual bunker, in case of emergency! The water business is very highly regulated and inspected. Great care is taken to minimize threats.
Check the pawn shops.
Nice to know that we've alerted the enemy to be on the lookout for this computer and its contents. /sarc.
Ah, sanity rears its lovely head. ;-)
I've read this elsewhere, and it does reduce the perception of threat to a more realistic level. Thanks for posting it.
That's reassuring. Thanks.

How many Polish executive directors for the Center for Environmental Information does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
Back in my day this would mean somebody was looking for a cool place to play Dungeons and Dragons.
