FBI Terrorism Task Force Investigating I-55 Crash

SLIDESHOW: Crash Scene Photos

Jay Levine Reporting

(CBS) CHICAGO A stunning discovery inside a car involved in a deadly crash on the Stevenson Expressway Wednesday has sparked a federal investigation.

Two people were killed in the crash involving a number of cars and semi trucks.

Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports one of the people killed was carrying several suspicious items.

CBS 2 has learned that members of the FBI Terrorist Task Force are among those involve din the investigation originally though just to be a huge traffic nightmare, but could end up being a whole lot more.

There were at least seven vehicles, including two semis, involved in the 1 p.m. crash that had the southbound Stevenson shutdown for more than six hours and left two people dead.

"I heard a loud noise, looked in my mirror, saw a semi jackknife. Two seconds later, a Jeep rear ends me,” Omar Majdobah said. "It was mayhem. Four or five cars, two nearly totaled, two semis hugging each other."

But it is what authorities found in the wreckage, specifically in the car of the 45-year-old man who died in the crash, that has drawn top-level investigators.

Sources tell CBS 2 he was carrying a $1 million check, plus other checks, a large amount of cash and nearly a dozen unused credit cards. That’s prompted calling out members of the elite FBI Joint Terrorist Task Force.

A spokesman has confirmed "...we are at the scene assisting the Illinois State Police investigating things that came up in the accident."

Neither state police nor the medical examiners office are releasing details of the investigation or the identities of those who died.

Sources caution against reading too much into the presence of the terrorist task force, which has a number of financial crimes specialists. They hint that the investigation could just as likely lead to a major counterfeiting operation as it could terrorism or terrorist financing. A lot will depend on the identy of the victim, which they already know.

Proof that you can't take it with you.

The victim must have been of Middle Eastern descent or they wouldn't be investigating terrorism.

First thought is the authorities should not be revealing any of this yet.

A $1 Million dollar check? Come on now. I've GOT to believe that that amount of money would be transfered by something safer than a piece of paper.

We cannot let Chicago operate their ports. Too much of a security risk.

FBI joins crash investigation

Tribune staff reports

February 23, 2006, 6:23 AM CST

The FBI has joined the investigation into a multi-vehicle crash on the Stevenson Expressway after police found a $2 million check, credit cards and other "financial instruments" in the car of one of two people killed, authorities said today.

The items were discovered in the car of a 45-year-old man involved in the crash, which occurred about 11:20 a.m. Wednesday on the outbound Stevenson (Interstate Highway 55) near Stickney, Illinois State Police said.

The man, identified as Lafi Nofal, was flown by helicopter to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died from his injuries hours after the accident, the Cook County medical examiner's office said.

There is some real good counterfeit money being passed. Paper is wrong. Almost passes the marker test--doesn't turn black, turns a shade of brown. Heard it from a money-lender.

This reminds me of the episode in Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising when the Spetznaz agent crosses the street without looking both ways and gets run over by a French woman.

The discovery that the victim was carrying classified materials reveals the imminent attack by Warsaw Pact forces.

Something tells me we should check this guy's laptop, PRONTO!

And also, RUN! (don't walk) to the guy's bank and start pulling stuff apart brick by brick. How many months will it take to get a search warrant to do THAT?

Hopefully this will set someone's plans back a-ways.

Prayers we can foil the rest of it.

Full Disclosure, anti-globalist-Bushbot Sarcasm Torpedo ARMED. FIRE!!

Unless, of course, the million dollars was just bribe money from the UAE or Senor Vincente Fox...

Cheers!

I did. Especially the part where it says it could be counterfeiting or something else - their financial experts do more than just look at terrorism.
