I agree Mike, I have worked in a shipping related job for 25 years and I know what security checks on cargo there is worldwide and how it has increased dramatically. Air from early 1990s after Locerbie and sea after 9/11.
IMHO the Republicans in Congress are fearing that due to ignorance the American people will be worried about port security and that could affect their re-election in November. The DemoRATS are just using it as a way to bash the President and therefore indirectorarily the Republican Party and therefore see it as an advantage for the November elections.

I've noticed that both parties seem to use the media as a basis for their opinions in cases where the American people generally do not have much knowledge outside the media hype. Why? Because they believe that the American people will believe what the media tells them. So instead of standing up for what they believe in or trying to explain things to the American people, they yell and run frantically away from the President.

There are only a handful of members of Congress that I have any respect for. IMHO we could be served much better if serving in Coongress was handled like Jury Duty, picked at random and asked to use common sense. IMHO all they are interested in is getting re-elected and being loved by the media.
