Three alleged illegals dead in Kan. crash

ROLLA, Kan. (AP) - A pickup truck carrying 19 illegal immigrants from Mexico crashed on a rural highway after a rear wheel came off, killing three people and injuring 16, authorities said.

The pickup flipped over and landed in a ditch, said Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ron Knoefel.

Nine people were riding in the truck's extended cab - four on the front seat, four in the back seat, and one on the floor between the seats, Knoefel said. He said the 10 others were in the truck's bed, which was covered with a camper shell.

At least one of the injured was reported in critical condition.

Not unusual, maybe in Kansas, but here in Phoenix you see trucks full of people in the front, and children (10 or so) in the back. No big deal at all...even going down the freeway @ 65 MPH.

Kansas has had a significant Mexican population (legal and illegal) for at least five decades. Doesn't surprise me. And yes, I did see the same phenomenon among the ag workers when I drove through the state in '98.

I was talking to a representative from our sheriff's department last night. They want me to support raising sales taxes to build a new jail and relieve overcrowding. I asked them if they had checked the immigration status of all the prisoners currently in jail. They said no. I told them why should I build a local jail to house federal prisoners? Transfer all illegals to federal prisons and our jail will be nearly empty.

KS has had a Mexican population for many years however, unless you live in KS especially in some of the larger metro areas (that's where many illegals go to blend in with other like folk), you have no idea just how much the influx of illegals have grown.

Having spent time in Mexico and shopped at some of their grocery/clothing markets, I always noticed how many males hung around outside. KS grocery/home improvement/shopping strips are now beginning to resemble what I saw in Mexico 20-25 years ago.

How about a tent city jail?


President Bush has been great on most things except for our border.
He has been great on the war on terrorists.
But on the border he is a gross failure.
He acted fast and correct on the 3,000+ people murdered at the world trade center.
He ignores the many rapes, murders and robberies which might be larger than the murders and money loss at the world trade center.

Start building the fence.

It should be made a felony for Criminals who overstay their visas and Invaders.

I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINALS or INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINALS or INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.
Those in government should be the first ones charged.
