Advocates threaten lawsuits to curb food marketing

NEW YORK, Feb. 20 — As more and more children grow obese eating fatty foods saturated with sugar, consumer advocates battling to curb marketing by food companies are threatening to use their big guns: lawsuits and bad press.

And it appears to be working.

Although no lawsuits have been filed, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is talking with Kellogg and representatives for soft drink companies -- including Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. -- about the way they sell products to children, CSPI lawyer Stephen Gardner said. ''Unfortunately, many food companies maximize their profits by pitching junk foods to kids,'' Richard Daynard, a law professor at Northeastern University in Boston, said via e-mail while abroad. ''Selling sugared soft drinks in schools is a good example. Asking them nicely to stop hasn't worked. Only the threat of litigation, which threatens their benign public image and their bottom line, really gets their attention.'' Daynard is also a long-time critic of tobacco companies and their marketing practices.

I admit to being totally biased against the group,

So am I. Their messing around with the popcorn in movie theaters is what got me to add them to my $hit list.

My first experience with them was through smoking bans. As I said earlier, they are hellbent on destroying the hospitality industry anyway they can.......upto and including the food that is served.

Thanks Gabz. I am pretty much nauseous by now.

Everything that you all are saying is correct, of course. Yes, it has to do with money. Yes, it has to do with taking personal rights and freedoms away.
However, these actions carry a far more sinister meaning, IMHO. These erosions of our freedoms are part of a far larger picture.

From the Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35
January 10, 1963
Current Communist Goals

32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture--education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.

37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.
(if this article is not about controlling big business, I don't know what is.)

41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.

Sorry, I am not good at incrementalism. Let's call the enemy what it is...socialism/communism.

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened."
-Norman Thomas, six-time Socialist Party presidential candidate and one of the founders of the ACLU.

"Children are fat today because they have video games, the internet,300 channels of TV,movies on DVD....
It's amazing what physical activity will do for a kid's waist line."

How true. When I was younger, we had some video games, but we also had BMX bicycles that we rode everywhere. We also spent a lot of time shooting baskets and other outdoor activities.

There were very few fat kids when I was younger. Now it seems that they are the norm.

Do you say that from personal observation or from "studies" you have read?

as much as I hate to I have to agree with this guy this time. I mean its really out of control just look what I found today from the ceo of kraft foods marketing food to a parent of a 1st grader here in my hometown

you will buy a box of hostess ho ho's and force feed your child every one of them in one sitting and tie him to a chair so he cant exercise the calories away get up and DO IT RIGHT NOW OR I WILL PULL THE TRIGGER G-DD**NIT

And this is happening hundreds if not thousands of times a day all across America by those evil food ceos that are completely out of control and I for one am glad that guys like this are standing up to them and making them stop.

When i finally have children it will be a load off of my mind since i can just let this guy raise them for me without me making any decisions for my family oh sure he will probably be a little annoyed when i call him at 3 in the moring to burp my baby and change the diapers but im sure he will rush right over to do it none the less so as not to appear hypocritically inconsistent when he spouts off about how much he cares for the children of America right ?

"I don't know what the label said before, or how it was formatted, but I'm generally in favor of food labels telling us what's in the food."

I don't disagree. I'm an avid reader of food labels; but I know what I'm looking for in the first place. My point is that adding more data, without giving people any education as to what that data MEANS is fruitless.

We see new "food" studies every week: "Coffee's bad for you!" "Oh, wait! Coffee's NOT bad for you!" "Wine is bad for you!" Oh, wait! Wine ISN'T bad for you!" "Fat is bad for you!" Oh, wait! Fat ISN'T bad for you!" "Eat your oatmeal!" "Wait! Don't eat your oatmeal!"

Don't kid yourself. People like those that are suing "Big Food" aren't in it for altruistic reasons; not by a long shot. ;)

"There is no money to be made in designing such programs as you suggest."

Well, you know me! I'm going to FIND a way to make a buck off of it, LOL!

(Sorry so slow to reply; went to give blood today. I supposedly saved three lives so far today, and it's only 2pm, LOL!)

They will not stop with tobacco, as we've been saying for a long time.

It's synonymous to global warming.

It's a crisis when it's too hot and it's a crisis when it's too cold!

It's a crisis when children are starving and it's a crisis when they have enough to eat.

It's a crisis no matter how you look at it.

Life is just a crisis!

Gosh, I can envision an agenda forming with this crisis! ; )

That, my FRiend, is because you are not averse to actually EARNING a living.......unlike the people who promote these things. They've never had to actually deal with the realities of the real world.
