New questions on Saddam, WMD

Published February 20, 2006

More information has surfaced in recent days about Saddam Hussein and his weapons of mass destruction programs, and the possible roles of Syria and Russia in spiriting WMD and massive arsenals of conventional munitions out of Iraq prior to the start of the war three years ago.

The new information includes audio recordings of 12 hours of conversations from the early 1990s through 2000 involving Saddam Hussein and his top aides, in which Saddam discusses how to conceal Iraqi weapons programs from U.N. inspectors and the possibility that the United States could be the target of terrorist attacks. The recordings were provided by Bill Tierney, an Arabic speaker, who worked during the mid-1990s for the United Nations Special Commission that was responsible for overseeing Iraq's disarmament.

One new piece of information revealed on the tapes, released Saturday by Mr. Tierney at the Intelligence Summit, a private conference held in Arlington, is that Saddam was actively working on a plan to enrich uranium using a technique known as plasma separation. This is particularly worrisome because of the date of the conversation: It took place in 2000, nearly five years after Iraq's nuclear programs were thought to have stopped.

Perhaps most disturbing of all, according to Mr. Tierney, was the fact that the Iraqi scientists briefing Saddam about the uranium enrichment plan in 2000 "were totally unknown" to U.N. weapons inspectors. The plasma program also appears to have escaped the attention of the Iraq Survey Group, which reported two years ago that it had ended back in the late 1980s.

Mr. Tierney points out that the 12 hours of information that he has translated thus far is just a small fraction of the hundreds of hours of tape recordings and....

what's bothered me since '03 was the way DeVillapin (sp?) spent so much time and energy going around the globe to get other countries to nix the UN support of our going into Iraq. Somehow, my gut says France was in this up to Chirac's haughty eyebrows.

Suprisingly ABC has noticed. It may only be a matter of time before this comes to the surface and people start to notice. However, it seems plausible that the Bush administration is not willing to redeclare it's old foe, Russia (i.e. the Soviet Union) an enemy. Cold War part deux.

Those very few who do notice will be the ones who already knew there were WMDs. Those who never believed in it and the war will not be convinced or even care what the tapes say . Nothing will change as a result. Again , most of America is brainwashed , suicidal (when it comes to defending ourselves against the enemies of this country) and uninformed .Sadly , these tapes mean nothing in the long run .

Of course, they were. Chirac's cronies and French banks were among the biggest beneficiaries of Oil-For-Food.

In addition, Total Petroleum was heavily invested in Iraq oil drilling concessions.

OFP effectively explains why France voted "Non".

Do you have a link from ABC, I looked and did a search but didn't find it. Was it something that was broadcast only?

The liberals could care less if Saddam had WMD. I remember seeeing a poll at DU that said something like 80% of them would still be against the war evevn if WMD were discovered.

WMD proof would go a long way to moving the moderates away from the Demolishedrats. The liberals are hopeless! I've given up on the ones I know.

Of course not a Republican is President.

The UN is against us in this so we must be wrong.

Castro says that we are imperialist for overthrowing Sadam that’s got to be bad. Castro is a great leader of his people and he gives them free education and healthcare. He must know better than Bush who cuts benefits and is against universal healthcare. And besides Saddam was democratically elected with more than 99% of the vote.

The USA is a capitalist nation and we attacked a socialist nation. How can that be a good thing?

Went to a nuclear engineering seminar last Thursday given by
Kurt Westerman, Program Manager, Global Threat Reduction Initiative, U.S. Department of Energy. Mr Westerman was sent to Iraq to do cleanup at contaminated sites.

One such site was one mile from the Syrian border.

Pictures were shown during the seminar of the cleanup. These pictures showed a large number of barrels of yellowcake which is uranium feedstock for an enrichment process. The barrels were marked "NIGER" if I have the spelling correct. Also in the picture were unirradiated fuel elements thought to be from France.

Even more interesting was, when asked why this is the first time these pictures were shown, Mr. Westerman stated that all of their efforts to get the story out were ignored by the media. Furthermore, Mr. Westerman stated that there was a Newsweek photographer assigned to the team and when asked why he did not take any pictures, the photographer replied that it was not news worthy.

I will post the photos when they become available if I can.

Colmes is such an ass.

I hardly watch Hannity and Colmes. I can't stand Colmes' kneejerk, hurried, loud-voiced "answers" (interruptions). He doesn't seem to have grown up past 6th grade.
