Dubai, 24 January 2006: - Global ports operator DP World today welcomed news that one of its senior executives, Dave Sanborn, has been nominated by US President George W. Bush to serve as Maritime Administrator a key transportation appointment reporting directly to Norman Mineta the Secretary of Transportation and Cabinet Member.
The White House has issued a statement from Washington DC announcing the nomination. The confirmation process will begin in February.
Mr Sanborn currently holds the position of Director of Operations for Europe and Latin America for the Dubai-based company
Mohammed Sharaf, CEO, DP World said: While we are sorry to lose such an experienced and capable executive, it is exactly those qualities that will make Dave an effective administrator for MarAd. We are proud of Daves selection and pleased that the Bush Administration found such a capable executive. We wish him all the best in his new role.
Ted Bilkey, Chief Operating Officer, DP World said: Daves decades of experience in markets around the world, together with his passion for the industry and commitment to its development, will allow him to make a positive contribution to the work of the Maritime Administration. We wish him well for the future.
Mr Sanborn, a graduate of The United States Merchant Maritime Academy, joined DP World in 2005. He previously held senior roles with shipping lines CMA-CGM (Americas), APL Ltd and Sea-Land and has been based, besides the US, in Brazil, Europe, Hong Kong and Dubai during his career. He has also served in the US Naval Reserve.
Mr Sanborn is due to take up his new role based in Washington DC later in 2006.
"The company is great."
Well, it's big, anyhow. It's also wholly owned by the government of Dubai, a Muslim country. It's not so simple there, bert. Not so simple at all.
As for DP World, it is wholly owned by the government of Dubai. You knew that, right? I'm sorry, but this deal is just plain wrong, and Sanborn's appointment is just plain wrong, given the deal.
That you bring Tiger Woods playing in a tournament in Dubai into this discussion is absolutely ridiculous. I don't follow golf. I don't care where Tiger Woods plays. Tiger woods is not a threat to our national security. Container cargo is a potential threat to our national security. Our seaports are a potential place where anything can be brought into our nation.
Shouldn't you be consistent in your condemnation. Tiger Woods takes moey from the UAE. Shouldn't he be held to the same standard you are holding up to Mr. Sanborn.
Who has 30 years worth of experience working for many different companies in the shipping industry other than DPWorld.
well of course the article says he is superbly qualified - its a press released from DPW. what do you expect it to say? talk about being snookered.
And you know this how, Mr. shipping expert.
He is starting to sound silly,"Me thinks he doth protest to much".
Did I say parking?!? I meant docking.
"Shouldn't you be consistent in your condemnation. Tiger Woods takes moey from the UAE. Shouldn't he be held to the same standard you are holding up to Mr. Sanborn. "
Well, when President Bush appoints Tiger Woods to a position like Sanford's been appointed to, we can talk about Tiger Woods. Then we can talk about Michael Jackson, if you wish.
I don't condemn someone for working for a Dubai-based company. I question the idea of appointing someone who was working for a Dubai-based company to a position where he will be overseeing the very business done by that company in the United States.
Fox----henhouse. Bad idea.
But, I'm done for the day. I have somewhere to go. You continue on as you choose.
And gee how much experience in the shipping industry do you have? The answer of course is nada, what's next are you going to comment on how to do brain surgery.
"And you know this how, Mr. shipping expert."
Are you reading the thread? That information is just upthread from here. You don't know anything about DP World, do you? You don't know anything about this acquisition or this appointment, do you?
You're just going along with whatever President Bush thinks is a good idea in this matter, aren't you?
Never mind. You appear to have nothing to add to the discussion. Would you like some more ice in that glass?
Fox----henhouse. Bad idea
And he also has 30 years worth of experience in the shipping indusrty and BTW, I see you bought into the lie that DPWorld is taking over the ports, they are not, they are one of many different companies working out of those ports.
You need to take a week and educate your self on their capabilities. Your response indicates a terminal bias against Arabs and especially agains our GCC allies.
"Has he called you Nancy Pelosi yet?"
No. Doese he do that sometimes? How odd.
"And he also has 30 years worth of experience in the shipping indusrty "
Yes, you've said that...about a dozen times. You've also accused folks of having no knowledge about the shipping industry. I take it, then, that you are knowledgeable about that industry. What's the source of your expertise?
actually, if you read post 47, you'll see that the person on the record as being against israel - is the DPW COO.
You're just going along with whatever President Bush thinks is a good idea in this matter, aren't you?
I know as much as you do, except I ain't taking the hillary/schumer talking points hook, line, and sinker, as you are.
BTW, if you want to learn how ports are run why don't you check out the below link from a poster who has actually worked in the shipping industry.
