Then the US Army did something the Spaniards had not been able to accomplish in three hundred years. It seized tactical control over the entire area of Mindanao, including the hinterlands, using combined American-Filipino teams whose exploits were almost unbelievable.

After the first Mohammedan missionary arrived in Sulu in 1380
I think we would call him 'General'.

Knocking Out the Moros
The four-day battle of Bagsak Mountain on Jolo Island in the Philippines took place from 11 to 15 June 1913. Americans of the 8th Infantry and the Philippine Scouts, personally lead by Brigadier General John J. Pershing, brought to an end years of bitter struggle against the Moro pirates. These Bolo men, outlaws of great physical endurance and savage fighting ability, were well organized under their Datus or chiefs. They had never been conquered during several centuries of Spanish rule in the Philippines. The U.S. Army .45-caliber pistol was developed to meet the need for a weapon with enough striking power to stop fanatical charges of lawless Moro tribesmen in hand-to-hand fighting.

No wonder they replaced the little .38 with the .45! I would not have wanted to engage the Moros!
Along another line of thought - I hope some one in our military is reading the "lessons learned" papers. It appears to be the case as we are quickly bringing Iraqi forces on line.

Good thread, perfect for Sunday reading.
In '69 or '70, I took a couple of leave days to visit Zamboanga. Before I went, I was briefed on the danger of a Moro running amok, killing as many Christians, Hindus or Chinese as possible before being blown away by the PC, Nothing happened in the few days I was there but I kept my eyes open.

Interesting article. I once met a man who'd fought against the Moro in the Philipines. He wasn't impressed with their intelligence. Brave? Yes. Smart? No.
He told me of several instances where the moro would build low walls to fight from. The walls were so short their legs stuck out behind. He said they just shot them in the legs and then finished them off.
