What's even more absurd is that they think the new company is going to somehow fire all the ILA union dock workers and replace them with terrorists.

The ILA and its west coast equivilent the ILWA are amongst the most militant defiant unions in the country.

I'd love to know how these people here explain the process by which this happens

Let's see some numbers. I'm really curious.

http://www.talkers.com/talkhosts.htm is pretty recent.

That idea isn't exactly Schumer's idea. In fact, Tom Ridge proposed that.

It sounds like Schumer is pushing for the same or similar.

Arbitron says he is number three, so his advertisers and his outlets know he is number three, so he is paid like he is number three. Imus makes a reportedly $10 million a year, so Savage makes at least that, if Rush makes $25 million. Imus is about number 5 or six but after number four, Hannity, five through seven slots are close together.

WRT 571, Savage has done many things that any true blodded American conservative can respect, he has built an audience that is rated number three in the land that should pay him a conservative $5 million a year based on what Imus and Rush make. That is pretty good, huh?

When you can do that, get back to me, and we can talk.

They inspect 100% of the cargo. They physically check the percentage you state.

Could you explain more about what the phrase "only X percent of shipments are inspected" involves. I hear that the most often but it does not seem to jibe.

"If you bemoan the fact that Customs only opens up a few boxes, I'm really confused as to why you think the nationality of a dock worker would make the situation worse... Port Operators currently inspect ZERO% of cargo."

Good Lord Almighty, I don't know how people today can be so ignorant, so unable to connect dots together, so naively and suicidally trusting. Is it the multiculturalism that was pounded into your heads? "Tolerance"? The shameful revisionist history lessons you were taught? A lack of discernment caused by governmental suppression of Christian morals, values and principles that once permeated our school systems and fostered wisdom in our students minds? Or are men just so feminized today that they lack in traditional male reasoning abilities? Or is it all of the above? I'm truly confused and all I can do is shake my head in amazement.

These Arab muslim men are from a middle eastern state that supports the Taliban and the Iraqi insurgents. They have been indoctrinated into hating Christians, Jews and Western culture. Their religious ideology seeks to annhilate the West and conquer the world. Their preferred method of accomplishing these goals is to find ways to infiltrate Western countries, and subvert and destroy their governments through terror and mass murder. And with all this in mind you can actually believe that because inspecting packages may not be in their job description, that their presence living and working within our port security system makes them a "safe" bet? ? ?

These are really sad days for America. Even back in the 60's and early 70's the hippies, liberals and socialists who protested the Vietnam war would not have been so STUPID as to think it's a good idea to hire VIETCONG to work in our port security. Friend, with all due respect, you are out of your @#*&#% mind.

"The large majority of the voters saw that the Democrats were soft on terror, saw the Democrats siding with the terrorists, realized the Demorats were against the war in Iraq (thought it was and still is wrong),"

Have you considered how it was that so many people became aware of this? Was it trough the mainstream media, or was it through people like Michael Savage? You don't have to bother answering, I already know.

"Rush opened doors for that ranting lunatic Savage."

Rush Limbaugh is in fact so good at what he does, that he only serves to block other conservative talk show hosts from rising to stardom. To reach the top you have to be able to compete with the best, and your messages have to ring true to your listeners. Savage has accomplished this inspite of having to compete with the Rush. Both of these men have succeeded because of their brilliance, energy, politcal savvy, patriotism and humor.

If Mark Twain were a conservative and were alive today, I think he'd be a lot like Savage. Brains, quick wit, humor, political savvy and gruffness are what made Twain so popular in his day. Though unfortunately Twain was a liberal, his gruffness and crotchityness are what helped him become a legendary figure. But back then a display of emotion other than a plastered on Bhuddist grin wasn't considered to be unmanly or 'insane', it's only in today's feminized America that male emotion is a tougher sell.

Good Lord Almighty yourself. I worked in this industry for 10 years.

If you have any factual counterpoint to make then make it, but please save me your hysterics.

I used poor phrasing.

Customs does not physically examine 100% in the ordinary sense of the meaning.

What they do is..

- When the originating warehouse loads the containers in Europe or Asia and the trucker is on the way to the marine terminal there, the shipper sends EDI to the Ocean Carrier with whom they have a contract. (This Ocean Carrier is not necessarily the operator of the actual Vessel it goes on because the Ocean Carriers have pooled their ships and containers).

Before the cargo is allowed on the ship overseas, the Ocean Carrier submits a very detailed electronic manifest to US Customs of every shipment that is on the ship when the ship will be in US waters (even if the cargo is not US-bound)

Customs can order any cargo to be grounded and not loaded. If a load got on teh ship , Customs could deny entry of that vessel to US waters)

When the ship is one or two days from arriving in the us, the Ocean Carrier sends Customs another manifest.

At the same time, the importer, through a Customs broker, sends Customs thier Entry paperwork.

All this goes into a computer which determines what to flag. Customs usually demands commercial invoices.

Customs physically inspects 100% of so called "Personal Goods". So Joe Bob has no chance of saying his moving his house here and not get inspected.

This entire supply chain is formed by established companies exchanging EDi with each other.

It's not like you show up at the port with your atomic bomb and it gets loaded because you distracted the help.

I was wondering about that. I can't see 100% of all packages being inspected as that would take some time and I often hear the phrase about only 5% or so of all packages getting inspected...but don't really see what can be done about that either.

Well, there went my plans for the day. :)

I'm flattered that your post was composed with me in mind, but I must admit I'm not really sure why. All I've said is the administration's decision to go ahead with a deal involving US strategic assets & a country with questionable affiliations in the Middle of a War on Terror troublesome on its face, and at the very least politically problematic.

BTW, you obviously know more than the average person on the subject. If you're really interested in changing minds why not try being a little less obnoxious?

You must not forget that 'the Administration' is still a political enterprise, and a "Liberal Light" one at that.

I have no intention on changing anyone's mind. That's not anythign I have control over.

What I have intended was to provide some very specific facts on how the ports actually work, instead of these vague overreaching statements that a LOT of people are saying that have no basis in reality.

What someone makes of those facts is up to them.

I don't work for the friggin company.

so far on this thead, we are supposed to believe that the company that has the contract to operate the ports can't hire and fire anyone, can install their own managers, can't select subcontractors, has all their responsibilities for scheduling et al done by some else.

so tell me, what can they do?
