Iran says UK must withdraw troops from Basra

Friday February 17, 2006
The Iranian foreign minister today demanded that Britain pull its troops out of the southern Iraqi city of Basra. Speaking during a visit to Lebanon, Manouchehr Mottaki said: "The Islamic Republic of Iran demands the immediate withdrawal of British forces from Basra." He said UK troops were destabilising the city.
The prime minister, Tony Blair, dismissed the comments as an attempt to "divert attention" from international concerns over Iran's stability.
Mr Blair today held talks with the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, in Berlin, at which both leaders reiterated their determination to take a tough line over Tehran's nuclear ambitions.
The prime minister said UK troops would stay in Iraq for as long as the Iraqi government wanted them to, adding: "British troops are in Iraq today under a United Nations mandate and with the consent of the Iraqi government. "They stay as long as the UN mandate is in place and the Iraqi government wishes us to stay."

British troops are they at the express wish of the goverment of Iraq. Perhaps Iran should take it up with Baghdad.
Anybody have a good analysis on the situation in southern Iraq?
Did the Brits blow it with their somewhat hands off approach?
Ok so Iran would prefer they cross the border and get some quality time next door.
Iran should withdraw their heads from their butts!!!
I'd like to know that to...my son is heading to Basra this summer...
Your opinion is taken Iran. Now STFU and go back to cooking nuke material so we have our excuse to turn your whole friggin country into GLASS.
Step across the IRAQ/IRAN border and say it, pal.
I triple-dog dare ya!
I've read that Iranian intelligence agents arrived to 'stir things up' a while back. Remember when those two SAS agents were beaten and detained - they were doing counter-intelligence work against the corrupt local governmental security/police forces.
Personally, I'd like to see them disembark from the Port of Bandar Dalam.
To which I say, "Fat chance".
On what grounds?
The whole thing is sort of full of irony. Remember for two years how the Brits made it look like their guys treated the Iraqi's with kids gloves. Setting up soccer games with them etc.. Now we see their guys betting the shit out of useless turds that where most likly trying to do evil things, or at minimum let their pee brains be stired up by their Islamofacist masters.
"...Iran demands..."
Blah blah blah ! ! !
Didn't the iranians want to annex basra at one time?
Because my suggested port of disembarkation would require them to invade and conquer the entire country of Iran.
Ahhhhh.....a Dim Bulb has brightened greatly.
Somewhat blow it? They totally blew it.
British and American intelligence services are training and arming Iranian Arabs and Kurds who live in southern Iran and oppose the extremist regime in Tehran.
Ah, the Brits were promoting democracy, then?
