I'm one of those 'throw everything into it' volleyball players.. lots of digging and rolling. Usually end up with bruised elbows and hips.
Don't know for certain, OWF, but I think it's bruising. You know when you get a really deep bruise how it gets all dark and purple in the center and kind of yellow toward the margins, especially after a few days of healing? I think that's what we're seeing in those photos. The tip-off is the discoloration around his eye. They wouldn't use Betadyne near the eyes, I don't believe.
But you may be right about the eye. Maybe it is just bruise.
In any case, he looks a whole lot better than I thought he would. When photographed from the front and on TV, you could only see a little bruising on his neck.
He's a tough guy for sure! And a gentleman to boot!
