I guess I was raised different from a lot of folks on this thread. I was taught to help my neighbor in a time of emergency, whether he merited it or not. Even if I did not like my neighbor I would lend a hand if their property was on fire.

The fire fighter mafiosi probably would have tried to stop any neighbors from helping on the grounds it was too dangerous. What a bunch of punks.

Check out what's happening in Emergency Rooms all over the country. ERs are forced to treat regardless of ability to pay. County hospitals are going broke because people don't get insurance and don't go to the doctor. They call an ambulance (required to transport them) and go to the ER (required to treat them). The reason a ten minute ambulance ride costs you $750 to $2,000 is because many ambulance services are getting less than 1/3rd payment from transports. Some people, who would be perfectly safe taking a taxi to the hospital, use the ambulance because the taxi driver doesn't have to take you if you aren't willing to pay the ten dollar fee immediately. Their credit can't get any worse, so they'll take a $750 ambulance ride because it's free (they ain't gonna pay).

I've watched several private ambulance firms struggling to make ends meet, hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, running ambulances with 250,000 to 300,000 miles on them, paying Paramedics $7.50 to $8.00 an hour to make fifteen to twenty runs in a 24 hour shift. Most of these Paramedics give up after three or four years. They're worn out and burned out.

I believe in helping my neighbor, too. However, in this country right now, there are a lot of people jumping up and down on the safety net as hard as they can.

If a person was inside the house in the subject article, nothing could have kept me out. If it was just stuff, well he made his decision. BTW, I don't believe he didn't know there was a fee for service.

Yeah. Legally I can understand this but not morally. I would have been out there helping my neighbor.

There was a story posted here the other day about a town or property owners' association that was shutting off the water to any residence that was in arrears on their taxes. If you lived next door to one of these people who had their water shut off, would you go out and give him a sponge bath every day?
