The press has spent so much time this week obsessing over Dick Cheney's hunting accident that some reporters have been rendered completely oblivious to other important news developments.
After delivering yet another breathless report on Cheneygate Thursday morning, usually reliable ABC Radio News reporter Ann Compton was caught clueless about the takeover of six major U.S. ports by a Dubai company based in the United Arab Emirates - a country said to have ties to terrorism.
Compton's exchange with WABC Radio's John Gambling went like this:
GAMBLNG: What else [besides Cheneygate] is being talked about in the White House?
COMPTON: Absolutely nothing. This has sucked the oxygen out of President Bush's trip yesterday. He went all the way to the Wendy's hamburger headquarters in Ohio to talk about health care. . . . . Is that on the front page of any paper today? I did not do a single spot on it yesterday . . . .
COMPTON: [Cheneygate] really has dominated everything else . . . It is a fascinating story and one that ABC has reported very, very vigorously at the ground level and I think very responsibly.
GAMBLING: Ann, let me ask you a question. Is anybody talking about this story . . . about the Dubai Ports World Corporation running our major ports in the United States? You know anything about that?
COMPTON: Whooops. [Nervous laughter]
GAMBLING: The reason I ask you is exactly what you just finished talking about - sucking the oxygen out of the White House and Washington press corps . . . . This is like letting Saudi Arabia do security in our airports. And I think that Washington reporters need to jump on this thing.
COMPTON: Well, send me a quick email, John. It sounds like something I need to see. [END EXCERPT]
He was on Scarborough last night, I couldn't stand to listen, much less watch.

Fill in the blank.
Quailgate!
Ann Compton..another brain dead reporter from ABC
Third generation of Gambling's on the radio. His father and grandfather were on WOR for years, and I mean years.
Reporter Caught Clueless = Dog Bites Man.
A New York City radio personality with a very likable, easy-going style. We listened to him every morning when I was growing up in the NYC area on WOR radio back in the 60's and early 70's. His voice was part of my childhood. I'm just amazed that he's still at work doing his thing all these decades later.
Have you ever heard Mark Knoller? He is the White House talking head for CBS radio. He has the most irritating voice -- talks through his nose and acts like it is taking all of his energy just to get the words out. AND he calls President Bush, MR. Bush. Makes me want to rip him out of the radio.
He may have not been the fellow you lisened to. His dad and grandfather were also on WOR. (all named John Gambling)
I've been using Snail Media. :P Cuz they are SOOOO slow on the uptake. :P
Interesting. Thanks for the info.
Incredible!!!! When we have terrorist activity on our ports...somehow it will be shocking news....and the media will scream that they were not invited to the press conference....
Never heard of him but I'm sure I would not last with him but two seconds especially if I hear the "MR BUSH".
Get running water out there yet?
You are so lucky! Unfortunately, our talk radio station has CBS as its news source. I was hoping they would dump it for Fox, but so far, we are still stuck with CBS. Knoller's voice is so irritating, I have to turn him off when he comes on. His left-wing bias comes through in his delivery, too. I don't know how he ever got a job in radio!
Did Arafat give Compton that thing around her neck? Maybe there is a reason the nun did not let her into the Vatican room with that computer.
I didn't see it either. I fell asleep before it Dateline came on
We in NY are lucky to have Gambling. He's the third generation of John Gambling (I grew up listening to his grand dad on 'Rambling with Gambling) on the air here and is a no nonsense, well-read, mature thinker. I'd like to see him go wider than just WABC.
