WAUWATOSA, WI (AP) -- The son of a former state Supreme Court chief justice faces child pornography charges while police pore over his writings that include descriptions of sex acts with youngsters, authorities said.
"The first thing we have to do is determine what's fact and what's fiction," said police Capt. Jeff Sutter.
"He kept a log and journal entries, but there's nothing to say it's true," Sutter said Wednesday. "There are a lot of things that need to be substantiated. And there may be statute of limitations issues."
Joseph Hugh Hallows, 67, was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Tuesday with 17 counts of possessing child pornography in his home.
Police searched the home Feb. 9, after a confidential informant gave a tip to a local child pornography task force.
The criminal complaint said scores of photos and files with written descriptions, including names and birth dates of victims, were found. Sutter said police also seized vials of urine labeled with women's names but had no explanation of why they were collected.
Hallows, son of the late Supreme Court Chief Justice Harold Hallows, was jailed in lieu of $150,000 bail. The charges carry up to 60 years in prison.
Joseph Hallows' wife was a Milwaukee Public Schools teacher for 27 years, mainly tutoring children at their homes, and she died in 1995, according to an obituary that appeared in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
A 62-year-old woman who lives with Hallows was not charged. Police said there was no evidence she had any involvement.
Attorney Gerald Boyle, representing Hallows, said his arrest was "sad and embarrassing."
"I've known him many years and found him to be a very decent guy," Boyle said.
Boyle also represented Hallows when he was disbarred in 1987.
Hallows' law license was revoked at the time for unprofessional conduct that included misrepresenting himself to clients and the court, making unsolicited sexual advances toward a client and having sex with a client.
Too creepy to even think about!
