Support for domestic spying probe falters

February 15, 2006

WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Support for a U.S. congressional investigation into domestic terror spying is waning following a White House lobbying effort, The Washington Post reports.

The White House, with Vice President Dick Cheney deeply involved, has been talking with members of Congress about proposed inquiries into the spying program, the newspaper said.

After the National Security Agency program was made public by The New York Times in December, there were immediate cries from Congress to look into the plan. The NSA had been authorized by the White House to monitor, without warrants, U.S.-based communications involving suspected terrorists. A small group of members of Congress was briefed periodically on the program.

The Post, citing unnamed sources from both major political parties, said the ardor for the investigations has cooled, especially after closed-door meetings the Bush administration held with the House and Senate intelligence committees.

Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio and an NSA program supporter, told the Post he is proposing legislation that would require the White House to brief a bipartisan committee and also make any such policy subject to congressional authorization after five years.

I would like to have been a fly on the wall for that "closed door meeting".

Let them investigate. And let's release all of the episodes of "domestic spying". GWB spying on Al Quaeda, Clinton spying on his politcal enemies, GHWB and Reagan spying on commies, Carter spying on our CIA guys, Ford Spying on who knows what, JFK/LBJ spying on civil rights leaders.

Let's see who looks bad when this is over.

Once this probe is dead, the GOP should call for an investigation into the leaking of the NSA's terrorist surveillance program. Drag some presstitutes and rat senator staffers in front of the cameras...

Heh, heh, looks like the Bush/Cheney duo crushed an atrophied testicle or two among the yellower of the Congressional wimps.

LOL.

Don't they mean a closed door meeting in which they disclosed classified information on how many plots where thwarted through this survellence?

This scandal is falling apart because it doesn't bear scrutiny if the President is well within his purview in protecting the lives of Americans.

Only, repeat, ONLY, terrorist suspects where survailed, and then it was only by machines scanning for code words. On top of that, it was only international lines.

I feel safer knowing that terror cells trying to kill me and destroy my country can't trust their communications to be secure.

Re#8 I know. It would just be nice to see some spine on the part of the GOP and have them turn the tables on the 'rats and MSM. Instead, we get the RINOs doing the Katrina BS along with the bad guys...

So how about that. They finally discover that there was no domestic spying and fold the tent. Gee, I thought that is what was being said from the beginning. Moronic antique media bites the dust ... again.

So this "scandal of the week" is not dead and buried, it is off to Cheney.

I honestly believe that Karl Rove is dreaming these things up weekly to drive the RATS nuts.

And we get three more years of this.... Sweet!

DewHine needs to go. CONgress can not legislate away the President's constitutional power.

domestic terror spying...

No more "domestic" than a flight from JFK to London being a "domestic" flight, or a phone call from Washington to Bombay being a "domestic" phone call.
