FRENCH COURT HALTS ASBESTOS LINED FRENCH AIRCRAFT CARRIER'S ENTRY INTO INDIA

PARIS: French President Jacques Chirac has ordered the asbestos-lined warship Clemenceau to return to France on Wednesday, after a top administrative court suspended its transfer to India.

Chirac's decision was a victory for environmentalists who had assailed the decision to send the asbestos-carrying Clemenceau to India, where it was to be broken up.

"This is a victory for international law, a victory for Indian workers, and a victory for workers all across Asia," Greenpeace France director Pascal Husting said.

"I congratulate the president on this decision." The fate of the decommissioned Clemenceau, once a symbol of French naval prowess, has embarrassed the government before Chirac leaves Thursday on a five-day trip to Thailand and India.

Chirac decided that the ship should return to France "until a definitive solution is found for dismantling," a statement from his office said. He also ordered further tests to determine exactly how much asbestos is aboard.

"Clemenceau, once a symbol of French naval prowess"

That must be one very, very, very old ship.

Was asbestos even invented then?

The fate of the decommissioned Clemenceau, once a symbol of French naval prowess,

The French had an aircraft carrier at the battle of Yorktown. No wonder the British fleet couldn't rescue General Cornwallis.

>>>Q: What is the most dangerous thing about a French aircraft carrier?<<<

Actually, wasn't it that aircraft could land but couldn't take off again because the deck was too short...or the catapult was too weak; I forget?

Or maybe, thats the problem on their latest carrier, not the Clemenceau ....which was an earlier ship.

Anyone....help me get my facts straight.

Leave it to the French to try and fly trucks off an aircraft carrier.

Leave it to the French to try and fly trucks off an aircraft carrier.

I'm sure their catapults could toss those trucks a pretty good distance. Kinda like french naval artillery.
