I will never travel to SF unless it is a dire emergency.

By virtue of where we live -- less than an hour South of San Fransicko --- we are frequently asked to take house guests or visiting family into the "city"...
We have rules....we don't spend money...
If unavoidable, we use carefully selected and self cleaned restroom facilities..
We don't buy souvenirs, we don't pay admissions...
(Exception made to board the Submarine)
On a couple of occasions - we did pay the fare to take insistent guests out to Alcatraz.
The only other outlay of cash, is for the toll bridge, bus and cable car rides. CHEAP.
We take all drinks, snacks, sandwiches, fruit, etc... with us in a cooler..
We plan to arrive in the city early after having a robust breakfast at home.....
We park free and take cable car or bus to the typical "tourist spots" that must be seen by foot...
We do those spots first.... and return to the car.
Then We go across the Golden Gate Bridge to a nice area to have our "picnic" late lunch.....
Then we finish up with the scenic 49 mile drive around the city....
Then back to our neighborhood for dinner.... in a clean, safe restaurant where the folks know us by name...
