The Ontario Legislature returned to work today - and one of the pieces of law set to pass within the next three weeks is Bill 27, the "Family Statute Law Amendment Act."

Strange, isn't it, that a western nation should even have to consider passing such a law? There's something terribly wrong here.

Although Christians and Jews have quietly and successfully run religion-based arbitration tribuals for a decade, they will now lose this legal right in the name of "fairness" as Ontario cannot legally exclude one religious group and allow others to continue.

I guess it's a small price to pay. Too bad, though. From what I've heard, Rabbis make very good arbitrators, even in disputes involving a Jew and a Gentile.

Interestingly, in the US there is nothing preventing arbitrations from being settled using Sharia or any other religious law.

The blatant hypocrisy of the social Left on this particular issue is publicly unraveling.

The people who want to say we need to have tolerance for all social and/or religious customs and regard all cultures equally no matter how distasteful we may personally find them, are now coming face to face with the "custom" that forces hundreds of millions of women worldwide to completely cover their femininity with shapeless unflattering clothes, stay home and do chores all day in the house owned by their husband, bear and take care of their husband's many children and still have time to prostrate themselves in proper worship of Allah five times a day.

Many self proclaimed feminists in this country and in other western democracies are finally becoming more than a little uncomfortable being feminists and also excusing this little difference in "culture".

When's the last time you heard of a Rabbi ordering someone's hand cut off or an adultress stoned to death? I'm betting any rulings Judeo-Christian tribunals have dished out weren't against Canadian or American laws. So, I don't see why they should have to go away.

There is no way, under American or Canadian law, to ban religiously based arbitration tribunals of one religion while allowing others the privilege. It's all or nothing.

In the US, private parties can agree to have their disputes resolves by a priest, rabbi or imam in accordance with any law they desire. However, the law cannot conflict with American law or public policy.

That being said, the greater concern with allowing Islamic-based arbitration tribunals is the fear that they will be used as a source of coercion against Muslim women here. That problem doesn't exist when two Orthodox Jews decide to have their dispute settled by a Rabbi.

That's in the Canadian constitution, so it is what it is.
