DNC: Swann Recites Republican Rhetoric on African-American Outreach

WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- This weekend, in a desperate attempt to distract Pennsylvanians from the Republican Party's failure to address the needs of African-American families, Republican gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann challenged Democrats' commitment to African-Americans. On ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Swann argued that "The Democratic Party has had a stronghold over the minority votes for a long time. I think they're misrepresented."

Swann's remarks come less than one week after the NAACP gave almost every Congressional Republican, including all of Pennsylvania's Republicans in Washington, a failing grade on their most recent annual scorecard. The NAACP Congressional scorecard grades members of the 109th Congress on various legislation that is important to the African-American community including, judicial nominations, discrimination legislation, education and environmental issues.

"No matter how hard Lynn Swann tries, he can't run away from the Republicans in Washington who have failed to stand up for African-American families," said Democratic National Committee spokesman Damien LaVera. "On President Bush's watch, more African-Americans are unemployed, household income has plummeted, more African-Americans live in poverty, and funding for small businesses has been slashed.

"Instead of trying to distract Pennsylvania voters from President Bush's disastrous record, Lynn Swann should join Governor Rendell and Pennsylvania's Democrats in Washington in fighting to provide all American families with access to health care, create American jobs that stay in America, and strengthen public schools. Together, America can do better."

African-American Unemployment Is Far Above the National Average and the Employment Gap Has Widened. The African-American unemployment rate was 9.3 percent in December 2005, an increase of 13 percent since Bush took office.

Don't they have anything of substance to counter the GOP with?

Honestly, all I see and hear is anger and warmed-over rhetoric. It's almost to the point that it isn't fun anymore.

That, and it shows they are really scared when real african american leaders step to the forefront and claim the republican mantle. Good for Swann; someday perhaps the african american community will understand what Hillary really meant about congress being like a plantation. Dems need to keep the black vote and to do so, they need to keep them from growing up and being responsible.

This statement goes against the many times reported fact that home ownership is up for black Americans.

I wonder what Damien LaVera's definition of family is.

"African-American Unemployment Is Far Above the National Average and the Employment Gap Has Widened. The African-American unemployment rate was 9.3 percent in December 2005, an increase of 13 percent since Bush took office."

I wonder how many of these unemployed persons (trash of all colors, not just black) are unemployable due to criminal records, drug and alcohol abuse, no HS diploma, etc?
The current "gangsta" culture is more to blame for this than Republicans. It's not just blacks- membership in MS-13 or the Latin Kings ends or destroys the lives of Hispanic youth just like the Bloods and Crips do for Blacks.
And affluent suburban white teens have the ability to screw their lives up completely without benefit of gang membership.

We have jobs going begging, and an entire generation that is unfit or unwilling to fill them. How do we fix this?

You can't say THAT!!!! Racist, bigot, homophobe!!! Racist, bigot, homophobe!!! Racist, bigot, homophobe!!!

Of course, you're right on. I graduated high school from a predominantly black high school. Most of the students had parents working at a factory, both white and black (so very comparable income). Very interesting situation in that the schools were some of the most well-funded in the state, yet the school was very middle class.

There was only 1 black student who finished in the top 15% of our class in a decade, despite making up about 60% of the school.

So many of the black kids at our school just didn't care. They'd play the race card for everything. The only thing they cared about was making the ball team. School was just something all too many of them were forced to do.

It's a cultural change that needs to occur. Until it does, things will remain as they are.

"The Democratic Party has had a stronghold over the minority votes for a long time. I think they're misrepresented."---Lynn Swann

Sounds like Lynn's got it!

Who ever put this piece of drivel together and calls it reporting is a schmuck. What a bunch of unadulterated retro-horseshit.

Can't they come up with anything new (and true)?

Democrats used to just lynch blacks a few decades ago. Now they just resort to hi-tech lynchings whenever one goes off the plantation.

You forgot "sexist", "Christian" and "Nazi." (Might as well add those three- they aren't correct either.)

There was a study done a few years back that found no statistical correlation between per-pupil educational funding and school performance.

The white "slacker" culture is as insidious as the "gangsta" culture- it just hasn't caught on as quickly."

So the national committee is attacking Swann, eh? They are running scared. Just wait until Blackwell gets the nomination over in Ohio and Steele's race gets going in Maryland.
