Mary Mapes Blames 'Vicious' Bloggers

Fired CBS "60 Minutes" producer Mary Mapes is still blaming the internet for ending her media career prematurely - or more precisely; the "vicious" bloggers who discovered that documents she unearthed in a bid to trash President Bush's National Guard service were forgeries.

"The criticism that was launched at us initially really came from the very conservative blogosphere, folks who are on these very conservative web sites," Mapes complained Friday on WVMT Vermont's "Charlie & Ernie" radio show.

"This was really a terribly vicious attack they launched on CBS," she insisted, before lamenting: "Politics is not necessarily the way it was when we all grew up, where you might disagree on something but you wouldn't eviscerate someone."

Mapes says that she was a victim of a new standard in journalism where "the truth doesn't matter" but instead it's "the perception of truth that matters."

"What happened to me, I think, and to all of us at CBS, was that the perception of truth became that these documents were not real; that there were flaws in the typeface and all kinds of sort of dry and extremely dull details about proportional spacing and superscript and all that."

Mapes said that she still believes the documents cited in the "60 Minutes II" broadcast by her boss, Dan Rather, were authentic, saying; "I feel that if they had been forged there would have been a flaw. And I have not been able to find the flaw."

She also noted that CBS's own internal investigation "could not prove that the documents were false."

No, she's the founder of that standard.

I sure wish everybody would use the right term...these documents were not FORGERIES. By definition, a forged document necessarily infers the existence of a REAL document, of which the forgery is a fradulent copy. Mary's 'documents' were FABRICATIONS, invented from whole cloth. A forged $20 is fake, but accurate. These things were the equivalent of a $7 dollar bill...they are INVENTIONS, not simply bogus copies of a legitimate government record.

Hey you know with the media being hamstrung by PC or fears of retribution I have turned exclusively to the internet for finding news and also I think the last time i bought a newspaper was a couple of years ago...to mask off a truck I was painting.
Paper media is dying, affiliate broadcasting is becoming a circus of inept performers of repetitive lame castrated commentaries.FOX used to be good, now its just a touchy feely warm your heart newschannel.

Using the internet in the proper way at well informed sites (like FR) has repeatedly shown me the truth and thus it is where I can get real time info, look at all the mohammed cartoons on the web yet are they in the US papers? The blogs like here at FR sometimes need a grain of salt but usually when you start getting the same account from many posters you see the truth in everything even disinformation practices that our government uses on a daily basis.

No, they fired several people of both sexes

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Mapes was the only one fired. Three more (all men) were asked to resign, but were still working for CBS months later.

Oh, hell no, Mary!

You weren't trying to eviscerate W at all, were you?

I remember all the lies you alphabet networks got away with telling about Nixon, too. Hell, I go way back and still remember the lies your fraternity told about Herbert Hoover!

Just depends on whose ox gets gored, doesn't it Mapesie, baby?

Google "TANG" and "forgery" You will get a bazillion links to articles explaining the flaws.

Or ask Buckhead. He can explain it pretty well.

If I recall correctly, other people were fired and several were asked to resign. Being asked to resign isn't much better, since they probably work on short term contracts they'll have very limited career prospect if they do not resign. They can use the rest of their contract to keep their health insurance while looking for work.

Rather was banished, the president of CBS News didn't have his option renewed, they picked the head of CBS Sports, who is known to be a Republican.

If she wants to talk vicious why doesnt she talk about the vicious manner she and Dan Blather went about trying to hurt President Bush. Stinking _____ got what she had coming to her. They werent interested in truth in any manner when they went about using forgeries to bad mouth the President.
