Mary Mapes Blames 'Vicious' Bloggers

Fired CBS "60 Minutes" producer Mary Mapes is still blaming the internet for ending her media career prematurely - or more precisely; the "vicious" bloggers who discovered that documents she unearthed in a bid to trash President Bush's National Guard service were forgeries.

"The criticism that was launched at us initially really came from the very conservative blogosphere, folks who are on these very conservative web sites," Mapes complained Friday on WVMT Vermont's "Charlie & Ernie" radio show.

"This was really a terribly vicious attack they launched on CBS," she insisted, before lamenting: "Politics is not necessarily the way it was when we all grew up, where you might disagree on something but you wouldn't eviscerate someone."

Mapes says that she was a victim of a new standard in journalism where "the truth doesn't matter" but instead it's "the perception of truth that matters."

"What happened to me, I think, and to all of us at CBS, was that the perception of truth became that these documents were not real; that there were flaws in the typeface and all kinds of sort of dry and extremely dull details about proportional spacing and superscript and all that."

Mapes said that she still believes the documents cited in the "60 Minutes II" broadcast by her boss, Dan Rather, were authentic, saying; "I feel that if they had been forged there would have been a flaw. And I have not been able to find the flaw."

She also noted that CBS's own internal investigation "could not prove that the documents were false."

""Politics is not necessarily the way it was when we all grew up, where you might [lie about] something but you[r fellow demonrats, who ran the media and the country] wouldn't eviscerate someone.""

There, that looks more accurate.

She meant to say:

In the old days, we leftists got to eviscerate any one with traditional mainstream views. If we try that now, those damn bloggers will hold us accountable. Polictics is just no fun now that both sides have a means to get out their message.

Anyone with any experience in computers, typing and/or typography can see that is irrefutable evidence.

Mapes will be upset to find out that she will NEVER match the level of journalistic fraud of the infamous Walter Duranty, the New York Slimes reporter who covered up Stalin's crimes and won the Pulitzer Prize for it.

You are 100 percent right about THAT!

And what does it say about a lying "news" organization like the NYT when even now, after the lies and fraud of Duranty has been public knowledge for years, they refuse to return that Pulitzer Prize, OR - if they had even an iota of class, to donate the Prize to a memorial for the millions of innocent victims of Stalin's genocidal policies.

Oh so if you can't prove they are false then you just assume they are real. Hello! You have to prove they are real before using them dipstick.

If she is still yammering about this at this late date, there is something mentally wrong with her. A normal person would have enough dignity, if not shame, to shut up and take her medicine and move on.

The CBS inability to prove that the documents were false has as much credibility as Adolph Eichmann being unable to substantiate the abuse of concentration camp inmates.

Mary still can't find he flaw.

And on a similar note, my 2-year old sometimes gets confused as to whether or not his diaper contains a poo.

In both cases I am convinced they know the real answer but shame or embarassment causes them to lie.

Not exactly. If a student produces a fake report card with all As, it would still be considered a "forgery" even though the real report card has (presumably) different grades.

In this case, then Lt. Bush presumably had various real memoranda typed up concerning his performance, with different content.
