THOMAS MITCHELL: And now for something completely offensive
Las Vegas Review-Journal ^ | 12 Feb 06

Just where is it written -- in the Constitution, the Bible or the Quran -- that there is a right to never ever be offendedá

As best I could tell, by week's end the Review-Journal was one of only four U.S. newspapers to print one or more of the dozen Danish editorial cartoons that recently ignited rioting and assorted mayhem in several Islamic nations, even though they were first published back in September. Apparently, it took a couple of imams out on a hatemongering concert tour to whip up a frenzy of hooliganism.

Several editors at a New York newspaper quit Wednesday when upper management pulled an article that included copies of the cartoons.

I can see it now, in the year 2040 my great grandson will be asking me, was there really a "cartoon war" that started WWIII that eliminated a billion Muslims?

They can't be that stupid, can they?

If Muslims think Muhammad should not be drawn, sculpted or portrayed in movies, then by all means Muslims should not do so. But to pretend that their fragile sensibilities should extend to everyone else on the planet, lest they be offended, is as absurd as saying American butchers should not be allowed to sell pork.

That pretty much says it all.

My granddaughter will not have to wear a Burka, no matter who I have to shoot to prevent it.

Of course in a few years, she'll be able to do the shooting herself. Knowing her, she would too. :)

There is nothing wrong with getting offended. And I wouldn't presume to tell a Muslim or an Episcopalian or an atheist what he or she should or should not be offended by.

What's important is how we react to being offended. Do we write an indignant letter to the editor? Or do we commit mass murder?

Nearly 2,000 years ago, the Jews of the Roman province of Judaea precipitated the revolt that led to their utter downfall by taking offense at an obscene gesture made by a Roman soldier in the Temple area. Of course they were dealing with the Romans, who couldn't have cared less about the sensitivities of the people they had conquered. On the other hand, these Muslim rioters are playing on the fact that Western society is both tolerant and good. Only under those circumstances can any appeal to human sensibilities have any effect. If we were the Romans, we'd have crushed them like ants.

By 2040 there will no pc police.

This war of cultures, the west will win.

Radical Islam will be driven underground again. Middle east Oil money fuels the war for them.

By 2040 ME oil will be a commodity like coal, still needed in certain applications, but not vital to our survival or security.

The oil sheiks can go back to kissing their camels for entertainment

Bravo to the gutsy Las Vegas Review-Journal editor, Thomas Mitchell, for telling the story of the cartoon riot insanity as it is. It's too bad there aren't more US newspaper editors with his moxie.

I see you are a half empty glass type of conservative.

No "shining city on a hill" optimism?

i am optimistic that i will not be there to see it and will die to defeat it, but the way of liberalness leads me to think so...

i pray i am wrong...

as for the glass being half full or empty i cannot say... because i keep spilling it.
