WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 The federal government has called an unusual scientific conference to look into two related bacterial infections, one that killed four California women who took an abortion pill and the other that has caused outbreaks of diarrhea and colitis in hospitals and nursing homes across the nation.
Fifteen to 20 scientists who have studied the two bacteria have been asked to present their research at the conference, scheduled for May 11, an official at the Food and Drug Administration said Friday. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the abortion pill, Mifeprex or RU-486, is so controversial that some officials have been threatened after speaking about it publicly.
Security at the conference will be unusually tight, the official said. It will be held in an auditorium at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Attendees must register by April 15. The National Institutes of Health will also participate in the conference, according to a federal register notice.
Officials are concerned that the political controversy swirling around medical abortions may interfere with the scientific discussion, the F.D.A. official said in an interview.

I can't say that it would bother me if this lead to banning RU-486.
Pro-Life Ping.
BUMP
It has been obvious for many years that RU-486 is exceedingly dangerous. It's just one more instance of abortion trumping everything else.
Abortion clinics don't have to observe the sanitary rules, for instance, because in most states the judges prevent health authorities from inspecting them. They don't have to have proper backup for emergencies such as you would have in a hospital. They don't have to make proper reports. They can conceal complications and injuries, and are seldom disciplined when patients have health problems or become infertile because of the complications of abortions.
The same with RU-486. The NOW and NARAL fanatics don't want to know about health problems. They just want to have handy little abortion pills made available to everyone, preferably without prescription and regardless of the age of the person taking them, and certainly without any kind of parental consent. If the FDA refuses to speed the process through, then they are demonized as Nazis.
The Dems have been begging for this pill. It will be fun to see them try to blame the deaths on Mr. Bush.
You nailed it!
I'm with you on that.
Typical NYT bias. How DARE the government look into deaths related to the Liberal religious rite called abortion.
I hadn't even spotted that, thanks.
HUH?
"I can't say that it would bother me if this lead to banning RU-486."
Sorry, I must disagree with you. This little pill was given
to me by my own physician at a time in my life when I was very young (too young to support a child) or even be married (but was) and had been abandoned by parents and new husband. It was God sent. I am happy and healthy as are probably many others who were fortunate enough to have a physician who understood the situation (and of course, broke the law). It was easier, healthier, safer than the alternative methods of the time (1953). To be married to an irresponsible male is just as bad as being raped in my opinion. Do feel this pill is safer than physical abortion. Disapprove of "filthy" conditions at abortion clinics.
This RU 486 pill was my 2nd abortion. First one was
by doctor in "filthy" office. I almost bled to death. Still have scars from tear.
Young inexperienced women will always try to do something to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Why should they be forced to lose their lives?? The rich have always had a choice.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Just curious....did you go on to have children at a later date?
Why was abortion not an option in either case?
I meant ADOPTION, not abortion.
Yes, I had three children later, two different marriages. All healthy, intelligent adults today. Did not chose adoption because noone mentioned it to me. In 1953 abortions were illegal and doctors who were caught practicing the procedure went to jail, lost their license. Children born without fathers were labeled "illigitimate" and ostracized by the community. Many lies were told to
cover up true birthparent of a child if there was no "accepted" normal family, father, mother.
Didn't have to wait long for some to capitalize on those deaths to push an agenda.
If the interest is truly on the safety of the women, consider that RU-486 has about one death in 92,000 to 200,000 (depending on the source, and some could be attributed to off-label use of the drug), while a shot of penicillin is 1/50,000, and pregnancy-related deaths (deciding to keep the baby) are about 1/7,500 (1999).
I didn't think the drug was developed until the late 80's. Are you saying you took it in 1953?
