Sgt. Matthew Zedwick, Oregon Army National Guard earned his Silver Star while deployed with the 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, serving under the 1st Cavalry Division on this deployment. Zedwick was the driver in a HUMMWV when they encountered an IED near Taji, Iraq which took the life of his gunner and seriously wounded his truck Commander. Zedwick returned enemy fire during the ensuing firefight after pulling his truck commander (TC) to safety. He returned to the vehicle to check on the condition of his gunner, Spec. Eric McKinley, a Corvallis resident. Unable to save McKinley, he then retrieved sensitive items from the vehicle and returned to his TC where he used his body to shield that of Davis. He continued to return fire until a medevac helicopter reached the scene.
Sgt. Zedwick remains a member of B Company 2-162 Infantry in Corvallis, Ore. He is currently a student at Linn Benton Community College studying graphic design. He is also an accomplished rock climber, kayaker and musician. His has a father living in Bend, Ore., a brother in Salem, Ore and mother in Indian Wells Conn.
Zedwick does not believe he has done anything more than any other member of his unit would do in this situation.
He will model for a new line of action figures based on the sequel to "America's Army," an online video game released by the Army in 2002 as a recruiting tool.
"America's Army: Real Heroes" allows players to fight as actual decorated soldiers, such as Wolford, 29, and will feature several soldiers. The soldiers also will be used to create a line of action figures based on the game.
Each action figure will feature a biography card and a brief narrative on how the soldier earned the medal. Game developers may incorporate a mission that mirrors Zedwick's experience, but no decisions have been made on how the characters would be incorporated.
Other Silver Star soldiers soon to be immortalized in plastic are Sgt. Leigh Hester, Spc. Jason Mike, Staff Sgt. Timothy Nein, Sgt. Tommy Reiman and Sgt.1st Class Jerry Wolford, according to the America's Army Web site.
Maj. Jason Amerine, who rounds out the roster, earned a Bronze Star.
Production on the video game and the action figures is slated to begin early this year.
I hope they don't meet the same bad end that happened to "Cody". Terrorists have no respect for our action figures.
Is it just me... or does he look like he'd fit in at SG1?
or SG Atlantis or Battlestar Galactica
One weekend a month, 2 weeks a year!
Kerry is deeply saddened.
I hope it comes with the Kung Fu grip.
