Deadline looms for free furniture program (Katrina - $20 million in free furniture)

(2/10/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - Hurricane Katrina survivors have another opportunity to get back on their feet. This time, there's a program to get free furniture.

The Hurricane Housing Task Force says this is the last call for evacuees to take part and get new furniture for their apartments and homes. Friday, February 17 is the last day officials will accept calls from evacuees living in the city voucher units.

So far, they have made 15,000 furniture deliveries. The city says they have had a great response from families who are very emotional about how this program has helped them get back on their feet.

Furniture program director Lindsay Davis said, "It's double beds. It's twin-sized beds. It's dinette sets, couches, coffee tables, dressers. It's a good starting package to get their lives back together."

"This particular program, we call it last-minute because we started it in November and we delivered hundreds of packages of furniture a day to people because people were sleeping on air mattresses," said Cindy Gabriel with the Joint Hurricane Housing Task Force.

If you are an evacuee and would still like to participate in this program, call the evacuee furniture hotline at 713-715-4100. You must have your FEMA number and your voucher number ready.

To date, the city has spent $20 million on this furniture, but officials are hoping they will be reimbursed by FEMA.

I hope the pawn shops have the space to store all of this, because that's where most of it will be heading.

Funny, I would have thought it would all be Lazy Boy Recliners with a built in remote control, cup holder for their beer and a little slot for their welfare checks.

Now watch the ones who are still living on the dole in hotels/motels to start whining that they didn't get their "fair share" of furniture. How can they take advantage of this freebee when they haven't bothered to go get their own housing?

"When will this end?"

My thought's exactly. When we had a fire in our home you can bet I called my insurance company, goodness knows I have paid premiums long enough. But never in my wildest dreams would I even think the Government (tax payers) owed me something because my house was struck by lightening.

I'm so dang sick of people sitting on there rear's and expecting freebies for everything on life.

Is Cripple Creek, Colorado too far out of the danger zone to qualify?

When will this end?

I'd like to think it will end when we PAY to move it to New Orleans, but I'm not holding out much hope.

"But, Your Honor, we were still in a hotel and didn't have any place to put the new furniture; it's not fair. Make them give us some even though we didn't qualify at the time."

I wish I could laugh. I believe in giving people a hand up but this is nuts. It's almost hurricane season again. LA should be providing the long term assitance. FEMA should just be there during the crisis period.

"Will they be asked 'D'ya want cheese with that?'"

Surprising priests dispensing Holy Communion don't ask the same.

EVERYONE DOES!
