That Old Red Menace Has Me in its Spell…

In the 1950’s , it was not unusual to see articles in mainstream magazines with titles like : “The Red Menace Must Be Stopped !”

Were you to try and publish such an article anywhere today – including the Internet – you would be greeted with rudely worded suggestions you were in dire need of psychiatric care ; because we all know there is no “Red Menace” !

How do we know this ? If we’re under the age of 50, we probably learned it in school. Those of us who are over 50 have had it drummed into our stubborn heads by the Media, by our political leaders, and by the Academic Community – (which has written many books on the subject, and which can cite them in mind-numbing detail.)

Hmmmm…. Would Chinese Communist espionage and other activities on US soil be considered a menace ?

Here’s a report I saw on Reuters yesterday (brief citation).

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Taiwanese citizen was charged in the United States on Thursday with being a covert agent for Beijing, and accused together with a Frenchman of trying to illegally export an F-16 jet engine, Blackhawk helicopter engines and cruise missiles to China.

U.S. prosecutors in Miami said a federal grand jury had returned a nine-count indictment against Ko-Suen Moo, of Taipei, and Maurice Serge Voros, of Paris.

Reports-so far – in the Mainstream US Media …..none.

Report from 11/05. (This did make the Media-about 6 weeks later, but was never really followed up.)

Story in The Washington Times, 11/05/05

“Four persons arrested in Los Angeles are part of a Chinese intelligence-gathering ring, federal investigators said, and the suspects caused serious compromises for 15 years to major U.S. weapons systems, including submarines and warships.

U.S. intelligence and security officials said the case remains under investigation but that it could prove to be among the most damaging spy cases since the 1985 one of John A. Walker Jr., who passed Navy communication codes to Moscow for 22 years.”

In the interest of conserving bandwidth, let me say a search of “Chinese espionage>USA” on Google will produce volumes and volumes of Chinese espionage cases in the USA- going back decades.

Just for chuckles, I suggest a further search of “Cuban espionage>USA” .

You may find the under-reported story about a female Castro agent who penetrated the NSC, and who managed to escape detection for several years.

Two days ago, in Atlanta, Georgia ( Yes, that’s still part of the USA, last time I looked ) a technical editor for Epoch Times was beaten in his apartment by two Koreans and a Chinese. His laptops were stolen, but cash and other valuables were undisturbed.

"At noon on February 8th, two armed men forced themselves into the home in Atlanta of Epoch Times Chief Technical Officer Mr. Yuan P. Li, beating him and stealing two of his laptops. After Mr. Li managed to free himself from the extension cord used to bind him, he was taken to an area hospital for treatment. His statement describing this attack is published below.

This crime, occurring in a very safe area in Atlanta and done without concern for the taking of valuables, breaks new ground in the Chinese Communist regime's campaign against The Epoch Times.

The Epoch Times is a strongly anti-Communist publication, which specializes in critical reports about conditions and life in Red China.

National Media interest to date : None.

“Well, okay,” the Intelligentsia say. “ We all know the Chinese like to play rough – and maybe they do stray onto our turf once in a while – but you can hardly cobble up a “ Red Menace” from that ! That would be kind of paranoid, wouldn’t it ? “

“ For there to be any sort of menace, there would have to be some sort of Party infrastructure here in the United States.”

If you are looking for a Party infrastructure , you might want to visit the linked site – which is neutral-friendly towards groups on the Left.

http://reds.linefeed.org/groups.html

Just for the sake of clarity, I have eliminated groups that are “Socialist or Social Democrat”, have eliminated both Green Parties, and have concentrated on “hard core” Communists.

It is difficult to estimate true numbers, since the groups tend to report numbers of cadres (a cadre is presumed here to mean an organizational “cell” ), so I’ll have to count in cadres.

Maoists-200 cadres
Castroites – 200 cadres
Trotskyites- 300 cadres
Marxist/Leninists – 50 cadres
Stalinists – 500 cadres

The size of the crowds at major Party demonstrations has been in the hundreds of thousands. Eliminating the curious ,the groupies, and the hangers-on ,it is still obvious the combined Communist factions are able to field tens of thousands of activists : a “Party infrastructure” by any definition !

The next time someone looks at you with pity, and tells you : “ But Communism is dead “, keep in mind that old Monty Python routine :

“ Actually, sir: I’m not quite dead yet !”

Not long ago I tutored my children on the Red Menace..again. They are both conservatives but I always want to make sure they teach their children well.

Actually, Lou Dobbs of CNN has for a long time (including tonight) dedicated segments of his program to how Red China is stealing, and even purchasing, high tech information from the U.S. which can clearly be used for military purposes. In addition, the ChiComs are using our disastrous trade policy to clobber our own economy -- all apparently to little concern to the congress or the administration.

Our antiwar org.page at mfvov is showing more and more blatant red. Speakers at rallies the past few months are getting blatant rather than hiding affiliations.

When we started the quick look we used to have to look farther behind the front to show red.

About Peace Groups. . This is just a small primer for families who are unaware of who is trying to speak for Military Families.

I don't think too much about the Red menace of today except for their last redoubt on U.S. college campuses. Those Red, and some "formerly Red," countries are certainly menancing, but I didn't think anyone much was attracted to their ideology (at least not until this clown Chavez arouse and started to play the Red card again in Latin America). China, especially though, is plenty menacing.

I mainly wanted to comment on the general scorn with which the left and all "sophisticated" people treat any reference to Red menance, either current or historical. This is the point you made and you are absolutely right. It makes me crazy that younger people have nearly all been sold the crap that there was no Red menance in the 50s...only hysterical Red ~baiting~ by right wingers. This message being powerfully hammered away at even today by George Cloony's film.

I don't think the younger generation has any clue that Stalin murdered more people than Hitler and that Red enslavement of all of Europe and Asia under totalitarian communism was a real possibility for a couple of decades after WWII. And, of course, they don't believe in communist cells doing serious espinoge in the U.S. in that period and employing people like Alger Hiss high in the State Department. They believe, I suppose, that the Russians invented their own atom bomb.

Instead of all the P.C. crap always pushed at students emphasizing America's evil (racism, slavery, lynchings, Indian "genocide", etc.) and the need to open themselves up to a sympathetic understanding of homosexuality, etc.,....instead of some of this crap, they should read the book Eleni, in which former NYT reporter Nicholas Gage documents the brutal torture and murder of his mother by crusading communists trying to pull Greece into the Soviet orbit after WWII. That is the brutal and heart-breaking price people were paying to keep the Red "boogeyman" contained.

I am glad you are still on the case! Good post.
