Heavy fighting erupted yesterday between security forces and alleged Islamic militants in Russia's southern region of Stavropol. The clashes erupted in Stavropol Krai's eastern Neftekum Raion, an area that had not been touched recently by unrest despite its proximity to Chechnya and Daghestan.
PRAGUE, 10 February 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The fighting has been taking place in Tukui-Mekteb, a small settlement located west of Daghestan and north of Chechnya.
Up to 300 Interior Ministry troops and special police officers have been battling alleged Islamic militants entrenched in several village houses. Security forces have destroyed at least two of the buildings with the help of tanks.
Sporadic fighting was still being reported early this evening.
There was no immediate report of casualties among villagers. Russian television reports that authorities managed to evacuate residents at dawn today.

Just to add that while Russia faces a real Islamist Insurgency throughout North Caucasus that emerged during the last decade of Chechen Wars, Putin invites another Islamist Jihadist Party Hamas to Moscow. If you want the instance of Political Insanity, that's a perfect example.

What does "supporting Hamas" mean?
It's about money and economic interests.

Isn't Putin happy supporting Hamas now? When Hamas operatives start showing up in North Caucasus, Putin will probably be the happiest man on earth--my sad sarcasm.

No particular "Stan". Simply Islamist insurgents operating in Russia's North Caucasus.

What your saying doesn't exactly compute.
If the Northern Caucasus thought Putin was supportive of Hamas why would that cause Insurgency?
