...A Southeast Asian intelligence official said at least three members of a Southeast Asian cell earmarked to carry out the attack on the West Coast were being held in Malaysia under the Internal Security Act, which allows detention without trial.
"One guy was given money to go for pilot training," said the official, who has proven reliable in the past.
He said the would-be pilot, Zaini Zakaria, was arrested in 2002, and the others were probably chosen to play supporting roles in the hijacking.
Members of the cell fled to Malaysia from Afghanistan after the United States began bombing al Qaeda and Taliban forces there in October 2001.
"They were told to... await instructions. They were supposed to meet up again to carry out a second (suicide airliner) operation," the official said...

Let's see how does it go - Kill them all let God sort it out - yep that works here.
Iraqi army searches new Al-Qaeda Hideouts
'Pakistan Times' Foreign Desk
KIRKUK (Iraq): Iraqi army units are searching for Al-Qaeda members in a remote hilly area where they are believed to have fled after falling out of favor with tribal leaders in former strongholds.
For the past two days Iraqi Army units, with US air support, have been moving through the hilly Hamreen region, southwest of the city of Kirkuk, which they say has become a major insurgent stronghold...
...acknowledged that low key reconnaissance operations were currently underway in the area on suspicion that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his followers might be hiding out in the area.
Anyone who listened to what the President said and also heard what he told the reporters afterward (which didn't get much airplay) knows it was way beyond just a daydream.
You can be sure Reuter's motives didn't include a search for truth -- watch the outcry from the left about "detention without trial."
FORTUNATELY, however, in Malaysia that cry won't be heard.
BUT, the next whining from left will be that BUSH is forcing the Malaysian's to 'detention without a trial'.
Who remember this? This is what I thought about when I heard president Bush talk about the terrorist that were going to crash into the sky scraper in LA.
Suddenly, seven of the men stood up -- in unison -- and walked to the front and back lavatories. One by one, they went into the two lavatories, each spending about four minutes inside. Right in front of us, two men stood up against the emergency exit door, waiting for the lavatory to become available. The men spoke in Arabic among themselves and to the man in the yellow shirt sitting nearby. One of the men took his camera into the lavatory. Another took his cell phone. Again, no one approached the men. Not one of the flight attendants asked them to sit down. I watched as the man in the yellow shirt, still in his seat, reached inside his shirt and pulled out a small red book. He read a few pages, then put the book back inside his shirt. He pulled the book out again, read a page or two more, and put it back. He continued to do this several more times.

You reminded me of the middle-eastern men that were arrested on a train on 9/11. They were carrying box cutters and had shaved their bodies:

Now that you mention it I remember that one also..
Maybe our IDIOT Mayor -- who blamed Bush yesterday for not notifying him of the threat to Los Angeles in 2002 (tho he was selling shoes at the time)-- maybe he'd like to help release these poor fellows who are being held without lawyers!!! I bet they'd prefer to be at Guantanamo.
That's right -- there have been signs all along. You can explain them away, but each and every one??
Actually, the mayor was upset that the White House did not notify him it was going to be mentioning Los Angeles in a speech. McClellan said they indeed did notify the mayor's staff, so it ended up making the mayor look rather silly.
Exactly!!
Feinstein is a disgrace, as are all of the Democrats who have made a pact with the devil to place their political aspirations ahead of national security and the lives of the US citizenry.
Thanks for the ping.
The current mayor of LA was elected last year, so he was not mayor in 2002.
I KNOW! Wish he'd stop whining, is all.
When will the news report that these guys escaped through a tunnel dug from the nearby mosque?
Hey, maybe they'll put it into a political cartoon!!
