LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Muslim civil rights group said Wednesday it has received an apology from the host of a Los Angeles radio show for making fun of a stampede that killed hundreds of Muslims during an annual pilgrimage.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations demanded an apology from KFI-AM 640 host Bill Handel after he made fun of the deaths of at least 363 Muslims during the Jan. 12 stampede.
According to CAIR, Handel imitated the people screaming and then joked that the pilgrims should use a helicopter to monitor pilgrimage traffic as is done in Los Angeles with freeway traffic.
Handel, who initially said he would say sorry only if CAIR denounced terrorism and acknowledge Israel's right to exist, apologized on his Wednesday program.
"The wound was very fresh for a lot of Muslims and the comments were out of line. And for that, I am sorry," he said.
CAIR also produced a copy of a letter of apology it said it received from an executive with the station's corporate owner.
"On this particular program, we crossed the line in reporting the Hajj incident in an insensitive manner," Greg Ashlock, regional vice president of Clear Channel Communications, was quoted

only if CAIR denounced terrorism and acknowledge Israel's right to exist
Handel should've stuck to his guns.
*kfi*
Clear Channel said, "My way or the highway" and Bill cowered. What a sad day.
Hey Handel, real Americans don't like those who apologize or appease Muslim fanatics.
Look for Muslims to become even more outraged now, and for Handel to lose ratings from his disgusted listeners.
Not a bad idea, actually. Handel makes a suggestion that could save hundreds of pilgrims' lives annually and this is the thanks he gets.
I wonder if there have been unpublicized threats of violence.
I was a loyal KFI listener, and switched KABC. Never went back. Mr Handel...you're a gutless blowhard.

MIDI - VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR - scroll down to the bottom to the Buggles
I awoke to KFI and heard Bill Handel
It seems someone named Ali had lost his sandal
Oh, my goodness, has he caused another scandal
Ooh ah ooh
He made fun of Muslims who had been stampeding
Helicopters in the sky they might be needing
Perhaps radio decorum he's exceeding
Ooh ah ooh...it drove them crazy
Ooh ah ooh...just freaking crazy
CAIR wants to get the radio star...CAIR wants to get the radio star
This time he had gone too far....and they were not laughing
They demanded that he start apologizing
From a Nobel Peace Prize guy it was surprising
This is something he can't be minimizing
Ooh ah ooh...it drove them crazy
Ooh ah ooh...just freaking crazy
CAIR wants to get the radio star...CAIR wants to get the radio star
This time he had gone too far....will they sue him for big dinar
This time they're not laughing...no, they were not laughing
But let's see things logically...Muslims don't say live and let be
They want to kill you and me
THEY KEEP BLOWING UP THINGS!
CAIR wants to get the radio star...CAIR wants to get the radio star
This time he had gone too far....sometimes he's doing things so bizarre
But he doesn't blow up cars...who do the CAIR guys think they are
CAIR wants to get the radio star...CAIR wants to get the radio star
CAIR wants to get the radio star...CAIR wants to get the radio star
CAIR wants to get the radio star...CAIR wants to get the radio star
CAIR wants to get the radio star...CAIR wants to get the radio star
CAIR wants to get the radio star...CAIR wants to get the radio star
CAIR wants to get the radio star
Given what we've seen in the past week, a threat of violence being made unless he (Handel) publicly apologised, his condition for doing so notwithstanding, would not surprise me in the least.
There was a certainly a great deal of pressure placed on him to apologise, it just remains to be seen from which side he felt it most from.
Handel lost me the day he made fun of the death of Lubavitcher Rebbe. I was amazed that he was so cruel. I don't listen to him and I look forward to the day he is replaced.
ping for your reading
His comments regarding this were so atrocious, that I refused to listen to him. If a non-Jew had made those comments, he would have been thrown off the air. I agree with you...I look forward to the day that he is replaced.
I think your right...he caved to pressure from upstairs.
Funny, but everytime these monkeys protest, the signs are in English. The whole thing is orchestrated by somebody else.
Absolutely- they are sockpuppets:
I always suspected Hamdel was a blowhard p*ssy.
This just sets us back in the battle against CAIR and multi-cultural bullying and intimidation.
What a SOS.
his irreverent humor regarding jews is exactly why i like him. you are wound up over nothing. he was forced to apologize due to violent threats, i have been told by some who works at a different station, he said it is well known in the radio community. imo, he was selected for this jihad specifically because he is jewish. muslims like nothing more than to force a jew to do their wish. shame on you for not seeing that.
