Russia launches project to create next-generation nuclear sub
MOSCOW. Feb 8 (Interfax) - Russia's Navy Command has approved a project to design and build a next-generation submarine with limited displacement, Anatoly Shlemov, head of the Defense Ministry's Naval Orders, Deliveries, Armaments and Hardware Department, told Interfax.
"A submarine of this class will guarantee the combat reliability of Yury Dolgoruky-class strategic nuclear-powered missile submarines and fulfill other tasks performed by multipurpose nuclear submarines," Shlemov said.
"The displacement of this class of submarines must be 5,000-6,000 tonnes," the military said.

So, that'll make them, what, a complete generation behind the Seawolf class ?
"...for export". I think they left that part off.
Bigger than a Los Angeles, smaller than a Seawolf... A knockoff of the Virginia-class? http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/nssn/
The new Russian subs will be able to surface after they submerge.
The translator really bungled this quote. What he acutally said was, "A submarine of this class will guarantee the certain death of many more Russian sailors, many of them named Yuri and fill the oceans with rusting hulks as many of our other multi-purpose submarines have."

Time to oil up the hinges on Davy Jones' Locker!
They're not bad, in theory. But budget shortfalls, no maintenance, bad quality control, slumping command cadre morale due to non payment of salaries, and other issues have seriously degraded their fleet.
I'm sure they can design a good boat, but they have lots of obstacles to overcame to making truly quality boats. Their submarine safety/accident record is awful.
If you think their subs have poor safety records, you should look into their history of coal mining.
Or compare it with US space shuttle safety record
Why does Russia need these?
Comparatively, the U.S. Space shuttle has less accidents fleetwide.
*sniff sniff*
So they can make tons of cash selling them to Red China?
