Greenfield: 'Do you really do this at a funeral?' (Sickening political statements at King's funeral)

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Four U.S. presidents -- including President George W. Bush -- were among the luminaries at Coretta Scott King's funeral Tuesday. Among some speakers' accolades and tributes to the civil rights icon were criticisms of the current administration's actions -- the war in Iraq and domestic eavesdropping.

CNN senior analyst Jeff Greenfield talked to CNN anchor Miles O'Brien about politics raising its head at the funeral.

O'BRIEN: It was quite a funeral, six hours. And the full range of emotions as Coretta Scott King was laid to rest. There were songs, prayers, praise and a healthy dose of politics.

Former presidents Carter and Clinton, and civil rights legend Joseph Lowery used their time at the pulpit to take some jabs at the current administration with the man, as you see, seated a few feet away, President Bush.

Jeff Greenfield is here to talk about the implications of all of this.

Before we get going, we will share video of former President Carter making reference to wiretaps, which of course has historical parallels here to Martin Luther King Day.

(Video clip begins)

CARTER: It was difficult for them personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated as they became the targets of secret government wiretapping, other surveillance.

(Video clip ends)

The entire text of the conversation gives the impression that Greenfield really, really wanted to condone Carter's remakes by saying that politics in Black Church's is an accepted tradition... but he just couldn't push the envelope that far. He ends up criticizing Drudge and, by implication Freepers, who find such conduct at a memorial service unseemly.

Carter was a turd in the punch bowl, as always, but the talking heads at CNN refuse to acknowledge it... business as usual.

He was head of the CIA under Nixon and took some of the tarnish for Watergate, but IIRC he didn't have any involvement.

And .. the always classy President - paid honor to Correta King - and never mentioned the mess Carter and Clinton left for him to clean up.

This is why I respect and honor our President. The event was not about him - it was about Mrs. King.

The dems don't care who the event is for - it's always about them and not the person being honored.

Nah, that would have been falling to their level. President Bush has more class than to do something like they do.

"We should mention, by the way, that Martin Luther King was wiretapped during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations at the direction of Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who was a hero of that movement.

It was good of Jeff Greenfield, one of Bobby Kennedy's speechwriters, to mention that.

With the likes of "civil rights legend Joseph Lowery" calling the shots they will be always injustice and inequality. Blacks that make it in the world are called Uncle Tom, white wantabees and sell outs by the Lowerys of the world. I hold no respect for that side of the movement.

Clinton could have come out in blackface with a watermelon under each arm and the crowd(as well as the MSM) would have yuked it up.

It's amazing how the raw, blind hatred of Bush can cloud your vision!

"And I think for people who are not politically committed.."

That's probably most people. Hence incidents and soundbites take precedence over policy.

You sort of get the sense that these days nuance is dead. It's coarse, isn't it?

It is...FROM THE LEFT. The Republicans, no matter what you may say about them, know how to be gracious at funerals.

Speak for yourself, CNN.

First, MLK was a Republican. Second, Bobby Kennedy was assassinated just a few months before MLK was. Third, Bill Clinton's swipe against Bush 41, calling him the frozen chosen, was class warfare. (I had to look it up. I had never heard it before.) And, what's up with 6 hour funerals. Rosa Parks" was 6 hours also. I have never experienced that.

Finally. revisionism is rampant. MLK was an integrationist, and everyone in the room is part of the resegration black power movement that followed. They don't want integration.

on the Daily Kos, which is a site from the left, the argument was these conservatives had nothing to do with civil rights, they have no right to lecture us.

How quickly we forget which party filibustered the Civil Rights Act. COME ON, YOU LEFT-WING LURKERS, ADMIT IT!! SAY IT!!! IT WAS YOU GUYS!!! IT WAS YOU LEFT-WING RACIST PIGS ALL ALONG!!!

Please excuse my Sam Kinison moment....
