Rolling Stones Decry Super Bowl Censorship

NEW YORK - Nobody turns off the microphone on Mick Jagger without a fight. Censorship of their songs during the Super Bowl halftime show was "absolutely ridiculous and completely unnecessary," the Rolling Stones said through a spokeswoman on Tuesday.
The NFL, which produced the show seen on ABC Sunday night, silenced Jagger's microphone during sexually suggestive passages of two of the three songs the band performed before an audience of 90 million television viewers.
The football league, still nervous over the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction two years ago at the Super Bowl, has said it wanted to ensure family entertainment at the game.
"The band was aware of our plan to simply lower Mick's mike at the appropriate moments," said Brian McCarthy, NFL spokesman. "It was discussed with the group last week prior to the Super Bowl."
He declined further comment on the Stones' statement.
The band may have known about it, but that doesn't mean they liked it, spokeswoman Fran Curtis said. Jagger sang the full lyrics during his performance, she said.
In "Start Me Up," the show's editors silenced one word close to the song's end, a reference to a woman so sexy she could arouse a dead man. The lyrics for "Rough Justice" included a synonym for rooster that was removed.
The Stones also performed "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," but the lyric "I can't get no girlie action" made it through unscathed.
The incident was reminiscent of the band's performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1967, when the host demanded the Stones change the lyrics to "Let's Spend the Night Together." As ordered, Jagger sang "let's spend some time together," but he rolled his eyes for effect.
He had more arm wattle than my Grandma.
Nasty stuff.
You can say what you want to about the Stones, but their records still sell. They are multi-millionaires. And they should have been dead from drug abuse years ago.
But they are still here, and, by longevity alone, have a good claim to calling themselves "The Worlds Greatest Rock and Roll Band". Since 1962 till now is a long time.
Got to agree, love the Stones also....got a couple of years on you.
They sucked big time. The Rolling Stones and the lesbian (Whooperettes) and the homo (Hummer) commercials made me thankful for Netflix and choosing my own entertainment from the long tail of quality. Just finished the "Wiseguy" TV series (crime drama from 1987) with Kevin Spacey (where he got his start) and Joan Severance (very attractive actor from Dallas).
Britany Spears is a multi-millionaire too.
Didn't Jessica Simpson get payed $500k+ for that PizzaHut commercial?
The Beach Boys are still touring and I think they still sell out large venues. Sometimes longevity is not a good thing.
How is it that Keith and Charlie are still breathing?
They had all of their blood removed in France and had it replaced with good blood not tainted with drugs. Several times. A total blood transfusion. The whole band.
You either like them or you don't. I do, you don't.
Did they really have their blood replaced or is that an urban legend?
I guess when you have tons of $$$$$ you can do things like that.
According to an old story in Rolling Stone magazine (when it was worth a crap) that is exactly what happened. They used it as a method to kick their heroin habits every now and then.
When they were young it was edgy - now it's dirty old men being silly...
Greatest. Cover. Ever.
They took that song and made it their own. Too many groups do covers that sound like they're trying to sound as close to the original as possible. What's the point? If you have no new perspective, why bother?
Devo's version is so good that, having heard it once, I even came away liking the original version better than I had before.
I like the Little River Band too. "I've seen the bright lights of Memphis, and the Commodore Hotel"...Dixie Chicken.
Didn't one of the main band member die from electrocution? Lowell George?
Oops! I think that should be, "I've seen the bright lights of the CITY"...
I had a giggle yesterday when some radio commentator called them "THE STROLLING BONES"
I also saw that tour...great show.
Well I have millions who disagree with your assessment. But, to each his own.
I never saw Iron Maiden, but their music was pretty good.
No, The Who said that in My Generation.
Ah, to heck with the Stones! The Pretty Things and the Downliners Sect blew 'em away at their own game. And ask Mick why they didn't release the "Rock and Roll Circus" film for 30+ years - because the Who absolutely destroyed them!
