What a nice man. A player with class and dignity and he will bring that same class and dignity to the Governership. Pennylvanians are very blessed to have Lynn Swann running for Governor. Move over Rendell....you time is UP!!

Go Swanneee....we're pulling for you all the way out here in Colorado. We have family ties in PA where my parents were born and we're from the South Jersey Shore as well. Good Luck and God bless.

Several recent polls since Swann announced showed him ahead in a head to head with Rendell.

Glad to hear that, Swann is a class act. I don't know Eastern politics at all, but I'm going to follow this.

BUT, we remember the stealth raise and the tax increase

Anti incumbent fever has never been higher. There are no "safe" districts this year, not even for Congress which had absolutely nothing to do with the pay raise.

I agree with you..I think Lynn Swann has an excellent chane against Rendell....if Rendell makes it past Casey in the primaries. If not, different race. My vote is for Swann.

great column~!
Not to mention the contrast between how a Black Democrat gets star status with the Media while a Black Republican can't even get respect!

...if Rendell makes it past Casey in the primaries.

Casey isn't running for Governor. He's going for Rick Santorum's Senate seat. Rendell has no opposition in the primary and now, neither does Swann.

As a Raider fan for way too many years, and a former Alameda resident who used to witness first-hand the humiliations Mr. Swann and his teammates were wont to dish out to my beloved Silver and Black, all I have to say is... Bravo, Swanny! Godspeed to the governor's mansion!

Fats Eddie is a pro, whatever else he is. He expected this just as surely Bush expected to be dissed. Only I think he hoped that Carter would behave himself. What a bitter old man Carter is. No class.

Lynn couldn't have picked a better time to run with the Steeler victory. It's almost like it was ordained.

I am a Seahawk fan but if Lynn wins the governorship of PA, the loss will be worth it IMO.

It will be Pittsburgh v. Philadelphia...

Not quite as cut and dried as that. The population of Philly is 1.5 million and of Pittsburgh, 334,000. Rendell beat Fisher in 2002 by 8%, but Fisher was an exceedingly bland candidate.

Swann can win if he gets a strong turnout from the PA conservative "T" in his favor and a swing of a few percent of the black vote in either Pittsburgh or Philly. Pittsburgh alone won't make the difference. Swann has to get the conservative base energized and eager to turn out for him. He'll have to acquit himself well during the campaign for that to occur. I think conservatives really want to get behind him.

Kerry only won PA by 2% in 2004 and it was that close because the conservative "T" really turned out for Bush (word was the Amish were even voting which is unusual). But Democrats in the cities turned out as well. Assuming the conservatives turn out in good numbers, then a few percent swing in the cities will make a difference.
