4 U.S. Presidents Expected at King Funeral (Live Thread)

LITHONIA, Ga. - Shivering in near-freezing temperatures, thousands of people waited hours in line Tuesday for one last chance to say goodbye to Coretta Scott King before her funeral.

"There's one word to describe going to go see Coretta — historic. It's good to finally see her at peace," said Robert Jackson, a 34-year-old financial consultant from Atlanta whose 10-year-old daughter, Ebony, persuaded him to take her to the visitation.

The lines had already started forming by 3 a.m. By the time the doors opened at 6:30 a.m., people toward the end were warned that if they stayed in line they likely wouldn't get into the funeral because of long lines that were already forming there.

An estimated 10,000 people, including four U.S. presidents, were expected to attend the midday funeral at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, where King's daughter Bernice is a minister.

I notice Hitlery is conspicuously absent from your list.

Very wise.

Maybe I should be more clear sometimes in my being a stickler for titles, especially with the MSM that likes to call President Bush "Mr. Bush". We have ONE President.....and four FORMER or EX- Presidents.

Queen Elizabeth

It is protocol in the UK for the Monarch to attend funerals of other Heads of State.

Sometimes she may delegate a senior royal.

The reason Her Majesty did not attend the funeral of President Kennedy was because she was pregnant. Prince Philip went instead.

Good point you make. President Bush is in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario with a lot of the Race Hustlers that will be at Mrs. King's funeral. He will be criticized for even being there since they whine that he hasn't done enough for civil rights, yet they would have been moaning and wailing if he decided not to show up at today's funeral and would be tagged for not showing respect for Mrs. King.

1) Betty Ford 2)Barbara Bush 3) Rosalyn Carter 4) Laura Bush

Most importantly: WHAT DIFFENCE DOES IT MAKE? "

It DOESN'T make a difference, its just a point of fact.

By the way, which U.S. President was Coretta married to?

From what I understand, it is proper to address all former presidents as President. I don't necessarily agree with it, but there you go.

"just a point of fact."

OK. What's the point? Look, the Pres. and former presidents probably all had some kind of relationship with the deceased and choose to attend.

According to the program in the Atlanta Jornal-Constitution, Jesse Jackson isn't speaking at the service. Also, Bishop Eddie Long is an evangelical and a conservative who supports George W. Bush's faith based program. He is pro-life and spoke out against homosexuality. Bishop Long hosts a show on the Trinity Broadcasting Network and many liberal civil rights leaders are horrified that the funeral will be at his church.

You seem to be making it a color thing. Why?

SKREETCH!!What? How am I making this a color thing? I've commented on Mrs. King's activities since her husband's death, on addressing the Klintoon as President, and which Pres and former Pres may attend the funeral. I think you may have me confused with another poster.

It's being covered on CNN if anyone is interested. I heard it would also be on C-SPAN but I don't see it there at the moment.

At a service Monday night, the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton galvanized the crowd with fiery speeches that blasted the government and public figures for trying to make the King legacy their own while doing nothing for world peace of poor black Americans.

"We can't let them take her from us and reduce her to their trophy and not our freedom fighter," Jackson said.

The above is from the full text of the article. This is Al and Jesse's last chance to use this woman to associate themselves with King's memory. I'm sure M.L. King would be appalled at what is being done to his legacy.

. Jackson and Sharpton are shameless. Well said T and awaiting katieanna's reply.

I don't know if anyone is horrified, but the church is huge and can seat a zillion people. Plus, Bernice King is apparently a clergy member there.

Found it on MSNBC. Thank you. I heard that the Clintons flew on AFI with Pres. and Laura. Wonder why his father didn't.

I think sending Laura should be sufficient. No one there will appreciate his attendance anyway.
