Muslims who want to live under the Islamic Sharia law were told Wednesday to get out of Australia as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.
A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.
Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state and its laws were made by parliament.
"If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you," he said on national television.
Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off".
Muslim schools will have to denounce terrorism as part of an effort to stamp out home-grown extremism under measures announced after Howard's meeting with 14 Islamic leaders Tuesday.
Asked if he was prepared to "get inside" mosques and schools to ensure there was no support for terrorism, Howard said: "Yes, to the extent necessary".
Britain, shaken by the rail and bus bombings which killed 56 people, is debating new powers which could include closing mosques where clerics are suspected of supporting extremists and deporting those who glorify suicide bombers.

"On a different topic; just so everyone is aware, Caribou Coffee here in the US is run this way"
What do you mean?
"We need to follow their example and add that if you want to stay in America it is best you learn to read and speak English as it will be the only language Driving tests and government papers will be written in."
Agreed.
At this point, given the conditions erupting worldwide among muslims in offense to and about so many others and aspects of so many others' cultures, I do not anticipate that any "Islamic owned" organization has any more superior purpose than to advance islam. And I think many of us now see the outcome of that.
I'm sure there are many individuals affiliated with islam who are peaceful and law abiding. But what I conclude is that any and all who are involved in this body of information -- mythology to my view, religious to their view -- ultimately intends by accepting that body of information that others, ultimately, not survive by one means or another, whether it be physical demise or cultural and religious demise.
I think that islam as a body of beliefs inherently involves subjugating others and despite individual personalities affiliated who are reasonable, their ultime goal as a body of affiliated persons to one ideology is the reduction if not destruction of others.
Commercial efforts by same are for purposes of funding that advancement.
"It starts to get complicated if you want automatic weapons, but even that can be done."
I think automatic weapons are illegal here in the US, but I'm not sure (not being a gun person).
"Our liberal zanies and the ACLU will object. It will boil down to depriving someone of their constituitonal rights. Since quite a few Muslim happen to be black, I suspect than several of the radical religious groups (such as Nation of Islam) and perhaps even the NAACP will object."
Well, this is a problem...one that I suspect will get worse.

I agree. That's why I won't go into their nicely done Minnesota lodge themed stores and spend my money.
I just think that people should know that behind the folksy, Northwoods themed brand, lies ownership in the Middle East.
It's up to the consumer how they spend their money, but they should at least know what's behind a brand.
Don't forget the pre-swim pork rub.
The rest of us will have to learn the hard way that religious loyalties trump any and all political loyalties every time.
If one could call codified misogyny and religious bigotry a legal system. I do not...

you know, i love australia...i love that brutal honesty..if you dont like it 'clear off'...
i wish more politicians spoke that way...
why use 4 pages of reasoning when 2 words will do...
Not at all. It just requires a fair bit of beareaucratic "hoop jumping" to get a Class 3 permit which allows the posessor to have such goodies as automatic weapons, silencers, etc... Difficult at times, but not impossible to obtain...

mainstream Muslim leaders.............Triangulated oxymoron
I have no problem with Muslim living under Islamic Sharia law as long we dont have to and they dont break any of our laws. I do have a major problem with Muslims who insist Sharia law become the law of the Land.
They don't like it? They can leave.
Yes, agreed.
Ultimately, I believe that WHY that "cartoon" of muhammad with bomb turban is so "offensive" to muslims is that it's so accurate, so realistically to the point of the very awful problem. And all the "outrage" serves to prove again and again to my view how out of touch they are with their problem, which is why it's such a bigger problem to the rest of the world (that islam cannot see the obvious and self correct and instead seeks to destroy that which speaks/depicts their obvious "problem").
It's not looking so much like "religion" to me but ideology without "religious" context...because there's no set of principles of reason, more than anything. Their ideology runs counterproductive to anything Supreme aiding and assisting those who 'believe' and fails the ethics test time and time again.

Interesting. I assume the basic notion would be that the applicant has a special security need, i.e., is a diamond merchant, etc.?
