Sanaa: A total of 13 men accused of bombing a US destroyer and a French oil tanker were among the 23 Al Qaida suspects who escaped from the intelligence prison after digging a tunnel to a neighbouring mosque, official sources said.

"The fugitives dug a 70-metre-long tunnel from inside the prison to a neighbouring mosque from where they escaped to an unknown place," the state-run website, 26 sepnet, quoted an unidentified security official as saying. The official did not rule out that the escapees received help from people outside the prison.

Fawaz Al Rabyee, the alleged main accused in the bombing of the French oil tanker in 2002, who was already sentenced to death, was among the escapees.

Jamal Al Badwi, whose sentence was commuted to 15 years for his role in bombing the USS Cole in 2000, was also among the fugitives.

Al Badwi had earlier led an escape by digging a hole in the bathroom of the Aden-based intelligence prison on April 11, 2003.

I'd say the tunnel was dug from the mosque to the prison.

Yeah, I saw that one. The only reason that I posted this was the line about the 70 m tunnel coming from a mosque. Very interesting little tidbit that was left out of the other article.

I believe the "dirty little secret" is the tunnel was dug from the mosque, not to it.

The local inman at the mosque dug a 70 meter tunnel under the prision.... Of course we can clearly see this is what really happened!

Indeed. What are the prisoners supposed to have done with 70 meters worth of dirt? Eaten it?

after digging a tunnel to a neighbouring mosque

Any bets on whether or not the digging originated at the mosque?

Any? ;)

Why were not sent to the 70 virgins immediately after their death sentence???
Normally the muzzies have no problems of chop of hands, etc. for thieves or even beheading others!!!
Hmmm.

I think they have it the wrong way - the tunnel was probably dug from the mosque!

If the 'mastermind' of the USS Cole bombing was sentenced to death, why wasn't the sentence carried out already?

Does ANYONE have a death penalty that actually means DEATH, and not umpteen years waiting for it, only to be revoked at the 9th hour?
