White House to lash out at media coverage of terror surveillance
Financial Times ^ | Feb. 6, 2006 | Edward Alden and Christopher Swann

The Bush administration will tell the Senate today that the National Security Agency's programme for terrorist surveillance has been badly distorted by media reports, and that the scheme is a strictly limited one aimed at al-Qaeda members and affiliated groups.

In the first Senate hearing on the controversial programme, which was set up secretly in 2002 and revealed publicly in December, Alberto Gonzales, the attorney-general, will say that the press accounts "are in almost every case, in one way or another, misinformed, confused or wrong," according to Time magazine, which has obtained documents outlining the planned testimony.

"Contrary to the speculation reflected in some media reporting, the terrorist surveillance programme is not a dragnet that sucks in all conversation and uses computer searches to pick out calls of interest," Mr Gonzales will say in response to questions raised by Arlen Specter, chairman of the Senate judiciary committee. "No communications are intercepted unless first it is determined that one end of the call is outside of the country, and professional intelligence experts have probable cause [that is, 'reasonable grounds to believe'] that a part to the communication is a member or agent of al-Qaeda or an affiliated terrorist organisation."

That's good news. They need to fight back -- our lives may depend on it, literally.

We need General Honore to speak for the White House - the media is "stuck on stupid" and doesn't hear basic information without distorting it like a pretzel.

I know the Bush admin has done well with this program, and probably have prevented many attacks. The ones that have not been prevented have been called something else, like the Egyptian pilot who lawn darted a plane full of people into the ocean a few years ago, the dude that shot up an El-Al ticket counter a few years ago, etc.

I'm just worried about the future. What happens when a lib gets in office and decides the NRA is a terrorist organization?

They should just tell Congress if they hate the program so much then they can do away with it

And when we are attacked again .. Congress can take FULL responsibility for it

The conclusion of the Left, and Arlen Specter, that the AUMF does not authorize the surveillance because it does not specifically mention surveillance amounts to saying this:

We can kill Al Qaeda, we just can't listen to their phone calls.

I think it's high time to go after some of these sewer rats. We can start with Rockefeller for treason, Adolph Hitlery under RICO, Schumer, Fienstien, Boxer, Kennedy, etc.

I have little confidence in the American voters, since the last election proved that we have 58 million people satisfied with mediocrity, and 56 million who are total idiots. THAT'S TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT.

Over 56 million people voted Democrat, even for a stiff lying loser like Kerry. If a charismatic person (not Hillary) were to run, the GOP would be in trouble. It's not like we don't make plenty of troubles for ourselves by supporting sheetheads like Chafee, Snowe, etc.

Gonzalez needs to do that...in his opening remarks...stand up...and tell Specter and gang to call him in the future, IF they get any real evidence that the hearing is necessary.
