Unfortunately you are right, they do normally screw it up worse than it was.
Well for me, whatever the cost, I don't want the elderly going without prescriptions. That is something I personally will spend for.
The abomination of a highway bill is something else. Even though I understand it...damn! Popular or not, Republicans should show more constraint.
As usual Russert was a joke this morning. He tried everything he could to rattle Boehner, from stating multiple times that the dems might very well take back the House, to Boehner's own connections with K Street. I'm convinced Boehner's choice as Majority Leader dissapointed the MSM and by extension the dems. The dems were anticipating the election of Roy Blunt who they planned on tying directly to Jack Abramhoff and Tom Delay. Boehner's very smart, he worked closely with Newt on the Contract With America, and I must say he gave Russert some direct answers to Tim's pointed questions. Boehner knows what's at stake in the 06 elections, and I think he has a plan to right the ship before November. At least I hope he does.
What's going to be difficult for Republicans to get across is that with the largest transfer of wealth ever to happen in this nation in the next ten years to the baby boomers, is that there is still a need to fund for those people who don't have access to private insurance.
Congress needs to find a way to help THOSE people in ways that won't affect negatively people who do have coverage.
Wall Street is uncertain how this transfer of wealth will affect the nation's economy, and with a shrinking job force once those people retire, who will pay the tax burden?
It's going to be an interesting 10 years, and someone in Congress needs to start taking the lead in thinking these issues through and how we're going to pay the bills going forward.
Here is a photo of some local state school's nativity play
Very interesting that Boehner is from a large family. I am the oldest of ten, and am grateful for the many blessings of lots of siblings.
Hah! That may be what we're going to become in this nation as more and more special interest groups emerge and everyone has a hand out wanting something.
Peach, we are in trouble....the nation ran wholeheartedly from addressing SS, knowing full well that Medicare is in worse shape than SS.
Only a crisis will get anything done unless the Repubs have a supermajority. Then they will be like the old Democrats...split between conservative, moderate, and liberal. That would open the door to a compromise to get a handle on costs.
It is going to cost both beneficiaries and taxpayers to fix it.
Two things I learned about Boehner today...he IS from a large family, and he smokes.
John Warner has ALWAYS beeen on the "other" side. Remember, he voted AGAINST Bork.
You're right, A.Hun. It's going to cost a lot of money to fix it and I don't envy the president who has to deal with the problem down the road when it does become a crisis.
And the problem with the $$ to fix it is there will be fewer taxpayers around once the final third of the baby boomers retire.
At the risk of opening another brouhaha (LOL): It makes me wonder sometimes if that's why the president wants the guest worker program -- at least those people will be paying into the programs which are needing cash desperately.
I thought Russert was way over the top with Boehner!
#####
Agreed! Russet [sic] introduced the segment by saying "Tom the Hammer Delay" as if he was saying Thomas Alva Edison, or Richard Milhaus Nixon or Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In other words the Hammer was part of DeLay's name to Russet.
Then he proceeded into a 5-minute question, hitting every accusation made about Republicans in the past 24 months, it seemed.
I turned the show off about then.
Completely off subject, still have not tried your Spiced Cider but think I might tonight.
Indeed, he would have to create a myth real quick.
Just had 24 2 hour special advertised for next Sunday
Oh, I hope you enjoy it, snugs. It's gotten very cold here again and so I'm taking warm cider (and rum) to the Super Bowl party tonight.
I am not going to comment on the comments I have been reading...you all are my friends...and all make good points...and the PASSION is one of the great things about FR...
However, as I was reading this thread..and your exchanges, it hit me that THIS is what Bush and his buds need. They need to set up a "day" or set time...to monitor, and/or participate in a discussion like you, Peach, and MNJohnnie have been having...
Peach..you could point out what you are hearing..and folks are saying on golf courses...
and Johnnie you could express your doubts about how "important" these things are...
Surely, if the White House personally monitored discussions like we have here on Free Republic, they would get a much greater understanding of the questions we have, the fears we have, the priorites we have....and the different levels of importance each subject is in "mainstream" Americans..
and NOT just by us...we are obviously more involved than some, but by what we hear while we are with family, or friends, at work, while shopping...etc.
Good idea? anyone, anyone??
Sounds good
