Should we start a FR "Buy Danish" campaign?
HNN ^ | feb 5 2006 | self

John Zimmerman is right. The Muslim countries have chosen to pressure liberal little Denmark in order to teach the media and governments, which stand by them, a lesson which does not bode well for free speech or satire. Kuwait has joined the Saudi boycott (the Saudi market alone is worth 1.2 billion) and I suspect the rest will follow. So, here is a plea from my Danish friends:

"If you Americans look with this great sympathy on our case, couldn't you then raise a consumer support of DK in the US? The opposite of a boycott. A movement of: "Buy Danish!" Please?

Alrighty now! Send "We Buy Danish" photos to webuydanish@knoxfarms.com. I'm setting up the DNS, and webspace and such for it now.

If you can, please put comments within the photos. Spread the word, and we'll get this moving. :-)

Just got my first block of Havarti. Hope it's as good as the huge tin of Royal Dansk cookies I also got today.

Just so you'll know, "Jeg" is pronounced as "Yi", with a long "i".

It turned out to be a BIG pain in the butt to V-Host this domain from where I wanted to. So things have changed a little....but not much. To send photos of support to Denmark, send them via e-mail to webuydanish@webuydanish.rc4systems.net.

You all have my word that I will NOT disclose e-mail addresses.

The V-Host and gallery server for this is at http://www.webuydanish.rc4systems.net/

We already posted a photo there as we were preparing to enjoy some Danish Havarti cheese! ...and of course, in true FreeRepublic fashion, everybody in the photo is ARMED. :-)

Spread the word and support Denmark!

Any special pronunciation helps for "Tuborg"?

I see from your home page that you enjoy economics. Any way to tell if my conspicuous consumption has caused any exuberance in the Danish economy? (Multiplied by the Freeper beer buying public.)

I saw your screen name and immediately thought not another Goth conservative, but then I saw the fish...deep sea fishing and Goth don't seem to mix...

If we could just get hold of some real Danish bread, we could have the best treat of all: Smorrebrod (literally, "butter-bread"). This most typical of Danish foods is an open-faced sandwich. Start with a slice of Danish bread, spread it with butter, and then top with any meat, cheese, preserves, sliced boiled egg, caviar, cucumber, or just about anything else you can imagine. A Danish Smorgasbord is usually a table covered with a wide assortment of Smorrebrod. Any topping is fair game; I have been served smoked horse meat, raw bacon, pickled eels, caviar, and much more (red currant jelly was my favorite).

Now, you can't do this with American bread. It's too flimsy. Even if you go to a store here and buy something that claims to be "Danish" bread, it's nothing like what you get in Denmark. The Danes have the best bread in the world. A loaf of Danish bread is about the size of a brick, and weighs about as much as a brick. It's very dense, dark, and heavy. The slices are very thin and look like shingles. They stand up to being buttered and handled, and taste divine.

Ohhhh...let me tell you! My wife makes the most WONDERFUL homemade bread! We eat it ALL the time! In fact, I haven't had store bought bread in about a year now!

After reading what you wrote, I'm going to have to get a snack! I'll be back. :-)

Generally you can find the bread in the deli section of most supermarkets. It is an unleavened rye bread.

That's an Amberjack. Yes, they're a handfull. The entire jack family (Pacific yellowtail, permit, African Pompano, jack crevalles, etc) are brutes on the end of a line. Worth your while to seek out if you enjoy both wrestling and fishing.

I've always been disappointed with what I find here. It doesn't compare to what I was served in Denmark.

Rød Grød med Fløde På

This is a language test. If you can pronounce this phrase in the proper guteral form, A Carlsberg is for you. Please remember the r is deep in your throat, the d has a th sound and the ø is sort of oo.

Danes have a lot of fun at the expense of visitors when they serve them Rød Grød med Fløde. It's strawberries cooked in a potato-starch gruel, served with thick cream (Fløde); it has the appearance and consistency of bloody mucous, and a lot of folks simply can't work up the courage to try it.

"some pretty good stuff"

I have to admit that before tonight, I was a Sam Adams fan...but this Tuborg Gold is very good. Very, very, very, very good.

The "no cholesterol" Dansk cookies were not so hot, but the regular kind were very good.

I can't wait to make some home made bleu cheese dressing wth my new cheese...

That's good with me. In fact, when the superbowl is over, you are more than welcome to just cut and paste my post # 124 into a whole new thread.

...later! :-)
