I've seen a number of concerts in my life. All of them were performed live--mistakes and all. I paid money to see musicians play and even improvise. I don't spend good money for a mime. If I wanted a mime, I'd go to the park for free with my i-Pod.

If you're going to do that, they should also admit to using pitch-correction devices live and in the recording studio. It's laughable how many "singers" out there can actually sing.

So much for Ashlee Simpson's career.

I pay good money specifically to see musicians improvise. If I want to hear it performed like the record, I'll listen to the record.

There is nothing, IMHO, like hearing music at the moment it is being made, warts and all.

Of course, the fact that I'm in a band playing out a few times a month (and making our fair share of mistakes) may have something to do with my outlook.

Some would first have to admit it to themselves.

How many bands mix the bass & drums waaay up to carry them because they can't cut it on guitar anymore? How's that any different?

I'm talking legendary guys too. But, I don't wanna start a fight by naming names.

In general, what we're talking about here is the teenybopper boy bands and pop tarts. These are more dance shows than concerts, and the bubblegummers who actually buy this stuff don't care if its lip-synced. They want to see the dance steps from the video.

I haven't seen a stadium/arena concert in almost 20 years. I won't pay a nickel to see a live act in a venue larger than a 500-seat auditorium.

Judy Garland lip-synched through every movie. As does every singer in the musicals. TV singing bits are taped or lip-synched. Its been going on since talkies were introduced. Vertually every TV live performance is Lip-Synced. If it sounds good, its not live.
