Bernard Lewis, a British scholar of Islamic history, calls this "a twilight world of neurotic fantasies, conspiracy theories, scapegoating and so on."

He means this place, right...? :)

If the peoples of the Middle East continue on their present path,...

I misread it as people of the Middle Earth....

When a few simple drawings, however controversial, can trigger outrage from Cairo to Kuala Lumpur, it is clear that something is askew in the psyche of a civilization. To put it plainly, the Islamic world has a chip on its shoulder.

I don't think I'd use the phrase "chip on its shoulder" exactly.  islam clearly produces an inferior culture.  One in which rationality and some level of tolerance, cooperation and compromise is impossible to achieve.  It explains why every country with a significant muslim population is several centuries behind those of its civilized counterparts and why the question of whether islam could ever be compatible with evolved humanity has been answered in the negative.

The question today is whether or not muslims can coexist with mankind, and they're making a strong argument that they can't.

But "if they can abandon grievance and victimhood, settle their differences, and join their talents, energies, and resources in a common creative endeavour, then they can once again make the Middle East, in modern times as it was in antiquity and in the Middle Ages, a major centre of civilization."

Well said, but American born citizens can't overcome a life of victimhood while living in this country, how on Earth will they ever do it while swilling around in their own turds.

Over what? Twelve cartoons in a Danish newspaper.

But, the koran calling Jews pigs & monkeys on every other page is ok?

Radical Islam is a thousand-plus years of mass insanity masquerading as a legitimate faith. Being kept in darkness for that long would make anybody blind, but they have no one to blame but themselves.

I read recently (sorry, don't recall where,) that a large part of the Muslim motivation is a perceived lack of respect from others. Sounds a bit like our own thug culture (You diss'in me?)

I just hope the Muslims and the thugs learn soon that respect is earned; not simply demanded. The overreaction to the cartoons is counter productive in that sense in that it results in reduced respect.

The cartoon with a bomb in Mohammed's headgear is so meaningful. Why are they so upset when so many of them love suicide bombers and the killing of innocent people? The newspapers that published it are so courageous.
