Some students at William Paterson University Thursday said they could see a correlation between the behavior of some students on campus and what a visiting professor called "post-traumatic slave syndrome."
Joy DeGruy Leary, an assistant professor of social work at Portland State University, presented more than a decade of research to a crowd of some 100 people at and concluded that generations of black families have been traumatized by the lingering effects of slavery. Her talk was the first in a series of Black History Month programs at the school.
Leary said she often hears blacks say that "good hair," or hair that is straight is more desired than "nappy hair," or curly hair.
"Why do we loathe the things that make us black?" she asked the audience. "These are socially learned behaviors."
Student Janelle Batson, 23, a junior, said she believes that lighter-skinned blacks on campus are sometimes seen as socially superior.
"This is something that is definitely affecting the black community on campus," she said.
Senior Dennis Wilson, 27, said "Many in our community are prone to dislike work because as slaves, we had to work long hours and weren't justly compensated."
Lawrence E. Mbogoni, Chair of African, African American and Caribbean Studies at William Paterson University, said in a telephone interview that the ramifications of slavery are still being felt to this day.
"What happens when someone is traumatized? They need to go through therapy," he said. "Freed slaves were never given any therapy after experiencing what they did."
Leary said drug use, high rates of incarceration, poverty, self-hate and the breakdown of the black family are symptoms that have not been eradicated from the culture.
"We are an incredible people, and a resilient people, but we have yet to heal," said Leary, who is black. "Cycles of oppression have left scars that have embedded themselves into our collective psyche."
This is a satire piece, right?
"What happens when someone is traumatized? They need to go through therapy," he said. "Freed slaves were never given any therapy after experiencing what they did."
And where can I find these 140+ yr-old victims?
Unfortunately, it is not!!
Yeah. That's it.
oh crap.
It's easier to pretend to be a victim than to claim authority for your own outcome.
It's something that a number of people can (and obviously do) use as an excuse.
That's right, Janelle. They are seen as socially superior....by darker skinned blacks who call them 'yellows'.
Sorry, but this tragedy didn't start until liberalism, abortion, promiscuity, welfare and a hundred other 'progressive' policies infected American culture. You can't blame this on slavery.
And the Holocaust survivors? No therapy there. No ' we were forced to work in the camps, so we need welfare now."
Just keep thinking victim and voting Democrat!
He's probably right. Trauma is passed on generationally. Black slaves get whipped and sexually abused by slave owners. Then when they have children, they beat them, then their children beat their children. This is the real cause for why the black population is poor. The rate of child abuse in the community IS HUGE. This is not junk science, its how humans behave. Its the reason why if you treat your kids well, raise them right there is about zero chance they will be criminals.
The problem with this lame excuse, is it skips generations of blacks that contradicted all this. 80 years ago for instance blacks had a lower illegitimacy rate than whites. Study blacks between 1860 and 1960 and you will see some stats that will reveal that the sickness among many present day blacks is a recent phenomena.
I think the visiting professor is suffering from post-traumatic liberalism syndrome.
Instead of spending time 'healing', how about spending time finding a job or starting a business?????
Very interesting analysis.....do you have any data on how trauma is "passed on generationally"? If this hypothesis is true, why is it that other formerly oppressed cultures/societies don't exhibit similar tendencies? Or do they???
Just wondering.....
When I see this stuff it seems so insignificant compared to the stuff we have overcome.
So how come he became a successful adult with 4 college-educated kids and 10 "on-their-way" to being great grandkids. He had no therapy and nothing beyond a belt buckle to the back for motivation.
Post-traumatic stress from a century ago? Try ingrained welfare for 3-4 generations--there's the problem.
slaves of the liberal white elite who run the Democrat Party.
As more blacks hitch up their trousers, tone down their boom-boxes and improve their pronunciation, the mainstream American culture will welcome them with open arms.
Too many blacks take the easy road, listening to their mullahs of hate and fail to think for themselves.
But on a positive note......things are looking up.
Blackwell.....Swann....Steele....Rice....and more to come.
Bring it on!!!
"Try ingrained welfare for 3-4 generations--there's the problem."
Worth repeating....well said.
